Topic Dog Boards / General / What small talents do your dogs have?
- By sibeluver03 [us] Date 04.08.04 17:11 UTC
I don't mean tricks or anything, but talents that show how intelligent your dogs are! Here is an example:

In my living room, we have a window that is close to the floor, so the Huskies are able to look outside. Kieron is the one who looks outside the most. During the night, I always pull the shades down, having open windows during the night gives me the creeps. I couldn't stand the thought of someone being able to look inside at night, so I pull the shades down to fix that problem.

Most mornings, I remember to pull the shades back up so that Kieron and Houdini can look outside. But sometimes I forget to pull it up. When this happens, Kieron usually gives me a dirty look when she figures out that she can't look outside. If I still don't do anything about the shade blocking her view, she takes it into her own paws.

She uses her paw to pull down a few of the shade things, just like a person would do when they look outside. Then she sticks her nose in the opening she made, works her head into it, and lets go with her paw. She then happily sits with her head stuck in the shades, watching the world go by. I don't know how, but somehow she manages to pull her head out of the shades without ripping the whole thing off the top of the window.

It is very silly when Kieron does this and sees something outside. She wags her tail slowly, a low rumble coming from her throat. Its a funny sight, seeing a "headless" dog by the window. I'm sure its also a funny sight from the outside, looking at the window. All the person would see would be a dog head with no body!

So what kind of small talents do your dogs have? Remember, I'm not talking about tricks that have been taught. Just simple, intelligent things like Kieron's small talent.

My Dalmatian learnt in a very short time how to open the lounge door inwards.  It never quite caught on the catch and he worked out if he kept tapping it a vacuum would form and it would start to come back at him, he then hooked his paw around it like a cat.

That dog never ceases to amaze me with what he can work out for himself, always to his advantage I might add.

I have always had Border Collies and they have never shown half as much intelligence as he has.

I once knew a wheaten terrier who liked to be able to see outside so he used to put his head through the cat flap at the side of the house and look round and the gate where he could bark at people walking past it was really funny to see him him sitting there with this cat flap resting on his head :D. We also had a yorkie and if we had visitors and she wasnt getting the attention she thought she deserved she would come and tap you on the hand with her paw. Another time she was lying half on the footstool and half on the sofa and i jokingly said to her "lizzie you dont move your bum im going to push you off" and she turned around and gave me a right dirty look and sauntered off i couldnt help but laugh :)

Your very lucky sandrah cause ide love to have a dalmatian but the only problem is is the amount of hair they loose i mean it would bother me but my mom and dad and my four brother would be very happy.

Anyway i hope this post get long cause i love hearing about clever little doggies :D

Obi always used to ask us to let him out to get the remains of the cat food (she is fed outside), he has now progressed to fetching us the cat bowl when he thinks she should be fed to speed up the process.  He will also bring us his waterbowl when it is empty too.

Spice never leaves the house for a walk with hubby unless she has come and 'kissed' me goodbye! It's more like a full face wash but so cute!

I was going to say the same thing about my dalmatian.  We have changed all the door handles to round ones that stumps them!  My youngest girlie can also smile if you smile at her and if you twitch your nose she will do it back.  They also know their own names and if you ask them to come in by the names they know which one you are refering to.  On the other hand ask them to come back when they to come back on their walks and they get selective deafness!

One of my Cocker Spaniels can open a dog crate from the outside. I went out for a while to get some shopping and put Ozzy pup in his crate while i was gone. When i got back there was Ozzy running about with a shredded kitchen roll in his mouth. I thought i must have forgotten to close the crate properly! it happened next time i went out as well. I was sure that i had closed it properly this next time so i put him in the crate while i was in the house and waited! Tina the oldest Cocker went over to the crate and lifted the handle with her nose and then started to move the handle along with her mouth until Ozzy was free! She doesnt do this through the night but i think its because she doesn,t want him to share her bed!

My dearly departed Lab cross (like most Labs) loved her food, and anyone elses.  To stop her getting the cats food I used to feed them ontop of a table top dishwasher ontop of the worktop - it would be about 5' high...........  She wouldn't let this deprive her though, and would 'bounce' with her front feet on the worktop, until her back end was coming up level with her front end, then she would lunge at the dishes to drag them off (and a lovely mess it would make too - but she was VERY good at cleaning up...........) Thinking about it, probably had a lot to do with her poo eating habit.........

well I have been amazed at my 3 month old chocolate lab max. He is typical puppy and is always bounding about and he loves my four kids and gets on top of them and licks them to death. If they are sat on the floor or even worse lying down he has to basically sit on their laps. Last week eldest son broke his arm and instantly max knew. We never said anything to him like be careful or leave but although welcomed other 3 kids home from hospital with usual licking and knocking over he just gently licked James feet. He is still sitting on top of other 3 but sits the stillest he ever has at the side of James and hasnt once touched his broken arm. Explain that to me!!!???

My Border Collie "Boots" also fetches his food bowl when he thinks its tea time, if i don't respond he takes great pleasure in throwing it around the kitchen (steel bowl and tiled floors, doesn't make a nice sound) Then if his water bowl is empty he lets me know by digging in it. He looks so cute when he is walking around with his bowl in his mouth.

Then Janska (siberian Husky) as loves to look outside and watch people and other dogs walking by (must be a sibe thing Siberluver03) She gets so excited when she sees another dog. She pops her head through the blinds too, although she has pulled the blind down a few times. And if im going out in the car without her, she runs to the window with her nose pressed up to the window watching me drive away. Then gives me a howl and a kiss when i return.

when taz is having cuddles with his mummy, bailey jumps up to join in to. taz gets off goes in the toy box, walks into the room and throws the toy across the floor. bailey jumps of my knee to play with the toy, and taz gets back on my knee for cuddles. this happens every time. you think bailey would get the idea.

when the tripe is cooling down the dogs sit at the kitchen unit. if i go to sit down, they give it a few minuites, then bailey comes in, he nudges my hand kisses me and then walks towards the door, if i don't follow he goes to my partner and does the same. if he doesn't get up, bailey goes out and taz comes in and does te routine again!!

the water bowl is in the kitchen, when i have my back door open it blocks the water bowl, taz sticks his head through the dog flap to get to his bowl.

My eldest dog opens doors just by standing up one paw on the wall the other on door handle on flick down and hey presto she is out. the only other thing she has mastered is putting a paw through the door handle in a kitchen unit and sitting waiting for her tea, which is kept in the base unit that she opens

Maddie can open the child gate that seperates the kitchen from the diner, obviously forward but also toward her by 'pawing' it till it bounces back! Also if I'm on CD and its past her supper time, she will sit beside me with her paw on my knee whining, when I ask her what she wants she runs into the kitchen then looks to see if I'm following her, if I dont straight away she will  bark and wag her tail till I do :D

toby will lay down with his nose/eye through the cat flap.he does this to keep an eye on the front of the house and to see if any one is coming to the door.the poor cats can't get in,so they paw his nose to make him move out the way.he will also look through the blinds but when they have been opened,he thinks he is hiding.if i sit here about 8/9 at night he will come and sit next to me and put his head on the table.he is trying to tell me he wants his biscuits if i ignore him he will then start using his feet to get my attention untill i give in.if i ask him what? he will go to the cuboard that has all the dog food etc inside to show me it's here.he has always done this but i think it our old dog that has shown him,as he used to do it the same.he will sit there for a while then look at you to see if your moving. he knows it is hard to look at the monitor with a leo head in the way so it gets you to move to get him out the way.

When our wheaten, bridie was a pup she used to put her head behind the cushion and think that she was hiding. And our other wheaten rosie when you ask her if she wants to go in the garden she jumps about five foot in the air and runs all the way to the back door jumping and spining as she goes. Its so cute to watch :D

Melvyn my mums Pom opens his cage door and closes it behind him with his paw, he was never taught this just something that he decided to do when he wanted to get away from us I think :d  He does think that he's a big dog though who's dead tough, but he's not really :d

LOL! I love hearing all of your stories. Dogs are just really incredible! I have four dogs and my posts are always too long as it is so I'll just do one dog here. My youngest, Lyric, the Doberman is very smart and sometimes I can't figure how he knows what I mean. He does all kinds of uncanny things that show how bright he is. But the latest thing I've noticed and I haven't trained him but he seems to know each of the other 3 dogs' names. And when we're on our hikes and if we're all spred out a little, I'll tell Lyric, "where's Bonnie? Go get Bonnie." And he gets all alert with his ears standing up straight and then bounds off and gets Bonnie. I see them both coming back on the trail out of the brush. I can say, "Where's Jose?" Same thing. He knows which dog I want him to go to. He seems to have pretty strong herding instincts. Of course, when he did it once, I tried asking him again. So, in a way, I suppose it's a little like training, but he seems to understand English. LOL.

He also follows me every time I go outside. He does not want me to go without him....velcro dog. I (shameful) am a smoker, but go outside on the porch and don't smoke inside. Everytime I reach for my pack, he leaps off the couch and goes to the door. That's not really that clever. It's just condition response I guess. He's connected my getting a cigerette with going outside. But I can't ever seem to sneak out without him. LOL

Even my horses were smart because if I was riding, I'd stop sometimes on the trail and get a cig for me and a carrot for the horse. The minute I'd click my lighter, my horse would turn her head around in great anticipation of getting a carrot. Another condition response thing. Funny.
