The point is to train your dog without tension or stress for either you or your dog and to do it very quickly. But just read the
link tohme has given and that will give you more of an insite. All I can add is, if you get it right it is verging on the magical.

Couldn't agree more Jackie :D It really has to be seen to be believed, I was very "load of nonsense" but decided to try before I condemned and am a total convert.

MaryRay site is good. Sent there for my clickers......found them a good for training.
I think clicker training is absolutly brilliant. It has totally worked on my dog and quite a few of the dog i know. Although it looks hard its actually really easy once you have read a bit about it. Hope all goes well.

I agree it is "magical"; i think too that it is one of those things that an owner can learn so far on their own, but there does come a point when they will need a demonstration or a video at least to understand the real potential of clicker training.

Lindsay - do you think it would help with a wayward 14 month 'Kevin' :-) that I'm trying to do working tests with - I've nearly got to the end of my tether, and he has got past his more than a few times!
One of those cases of 'fine at home, but get in company........'
You can't go clicking in a test.

Perhaps you may be interested in the following clicker course:
Specialised training for working gundogs covering foundation skills for retrieve, control work, steadiness to gun and general field experience.
To get the best from this course it is essential you have commitment for your practice sessions and the dogs are suitable for this training and a field environment.
This course will cover the requirements for KC Working Gundog Certificate - preliminary stage which includes control, hunting, retrieving, control at distance and general temperament.
Foundation skills will cover walking at heel without lead and with high distraction levels, hunting, retrieving unseen dummies from a variety of situations including unseen and seen, marking and recovery (delivery to hand) recall in high distraction and stop on cue with distraction plus steadiness to shot.
10 & 31 October, 14 November, 12 December 9 - 4 pm.
Course Fee £116 inc VAT
Venue: Evesham
Contact: Helen Phillips 01386 860710
Good to see that Tohme, is Helen Phillips the instructor?
Hi Jo - a lot depends :D
People are successfully using the clicker for all sorts now including working trials and gundog work, and i see no reason why it wouldn't help, but if it's a new thing for you it needs to be done correctly and so i would suggest going on a clicker course or at least watching a good video as unless you do this you will find it hard to get going properly.
I know most people seem to be converts once they try the method :)
It's also a good idea to get to grips with some of the learning theory underpinning clicker training as it makes everything clearer.
Also once the dog is used to doing lots of tasks one after the other, it starts to understand that it does not always get rewarded straight away so you dont have to worry about rewarding in the ring or whereever.
Hth a bit :)

That could well be useful, Tohme. Trouble is, we get heavily into picking up starting next Thursday, but if I have a window in my ever so busy schedule (!!;-)) I will go.
Little so-and-so is very very clever, could quite likely make FTCh in the right hands, but boy is he a handful!!
Who is Helen Philips?
