HI everyone I am looking for some advice!
We have a 4 year old boxer dog and have just got a boxer bitch (11 weeks old) She wants to play wiht him but all he does is growl at her all the time it's got that bad that she has to be kept in the kitchen most of the day locked away from him! He seems very interested in her but then growls and snaps at her when she is in the same room as him! She is very good at night and has settled in really well he wants to play with her you can see it in his face but I don't think he relly knows how as he hasn't had that much contact with other dog, mainly due to the fact that there are a lot of ignorate dog owners where we live who think Boxers are savage beasts who attack everything they come into contact with so therefore they walk the long way round when they see him coming! He is a real softie and this behaviour is just not like him!!!
Please please can someone help??????
Hi
I have three boxers two bitches and a male the older one whose son i kept, and a four year old bitch that had a litter nine weeks ago, all the three get on, but unfortunatley i sold a puppy that wasnt being cared for so i removed the puppy and brought him home, I like you found that my older bitch had to be monitered at all times around the puppy it was like walking on egg shells. But i had a play pen and a crate where i could put the puppy into.My older bitch is just allowing the puppy to play near her although we do get the odd growl just to let him know where is place, i do think that it takes at least ten to fourteen days for a older dog to get used to a new puppy i would try and let them just get to know each other gradually and see how it goes, have you tried bathing your new puppy to remove the smell of its mother and litter brothers and sisters this may help, but it will take time for your older dog to accept the puppy, just persevere and see how it goes or you could buy a dog crate and crate the puppy in the same room
Good luck

If he hasn't had much contact with other dogs, then he probably doesn't understand *how* to act around other dogs, he may even be scared by her behaviour. IMHO it's going to take some careful management to teach the two of them how to enjoy each other. I think your best be would be to contact an APDT member with experience in behaviour, or a member of the UKRCB through your vet, either of these two organisation should be able to provide you with details of somebody who can help you manage the situation so that he can learn how to be a proper doggy dog :)
It is surprising just how many adult male dogs are actually frightened of a small puppy. Instead of shutting the pup away it would be better to have a crate or playpen, as Polly suggested. Your older dog can then observe this strange new creature from a place of safety :-)
Keep an eye on them at all times, and never leave them alone together until you are 100% sure that it is safe to do so. Boxers generally are sociable animals - they will probably become good friends but it could take some time.
Try not to intervene unless absolutely necessary if your older dog disciplines the pup when it gets too pushy. Telling him off for putting her in her place will confuse him and possibly make matters worse.

Try keeping your pup on a lead whilst in the same room as him. I know that my oldest dog is quite scared of our young pup, although would never admit it. The pup can be annoying and he hates it when pup jumps at his face and has put him in his place a few times by growling at him. We are now making sure they spend time together with pup on a lead and it is working well.

hi i too am experiencing similar problems, i have an 8yo cocker and a 4yo springer who are fine together but the springer is very very nervy of everything especially other dogs. we have just bought a black gsd pup who my springer hated on first sight, he has attacked him on several occasions. we have sought the advice of our vet and our trainer/behaviourist who thinks there may be some hope the gsd is now 22 weeks old and huge everyone is worried that the worm will turn and he will get nasty with other dogs too. the bitch is being spayed tomorrow. we have been told to try and make the gsd alpha over the springer because he is not coping with the job! the cocker is the boss of all of them
