Topic Dog Boards / Health / Allergy to Malasezzia, raw feed dog.
- By peilady [gb] Date 22.08.04 10:11 UTC
I've had one of my dogs allergy tested last Friday, to find that she is clear of most things, but is prone to mold and yeast growths.  The Malasezzia result was way off the scale, result being 25 and the norm for an allergy result would be 20.  The tests were the skin testing not the serum tests.

As I feed her a raw diet, AMP minces etc, what I would like to know is what are the best "Carbs" to feed her, so hopefully not to increase the yeast production.  She is currently on antibiotics as she also has a mass amount of bacterial infection in her skin " being a sharpei there's plenty of skin :0(" for approx a month, Ceporex 500mg twice daily, and Nizoral antifungal tabs once a day 200mgs daily.  From Sue Paterson's (allergen specialist) report, she is hoping the Nizoral meds will help, and if so she could then be reduced to twice weekly, but this sounds like it will be for life unfortunately :-(  I have been recomended to bathe her if and when is needed, but as she has had enough I feel at the moment re- testing and biopsies, I don't want to stress her anymore, so will leave it for a while.

She has also been tested for a Thyroid imbalance in the USA and is now on life-time Soloxine meds. Now showing up a lot in the Sharpei breed

When she is phyically upto being spayed she will be done asap, so reducing the further stress of having a season, and will be a much loved member of my family along with the other 5....LOL  the differnce being she needs a lot more TLC and health care.

Hope someone can help me achieve the best food balance for her and any further advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

At a guess I'd say rice, but I'm sure somebody like Tohme will be along to confirm......

As long as she isn't allergic to Tea Tree, you could try using tea tree shampoo to bathe the affected areas (check the ingredients for Melaleuca ;) ) Tea Tree is very effective against bacterial and fungal infections.  You can also get Tea Tree talcum powder (Thursday plantation) which is very good for keeping the skin dry.

Good luck with her, its no joke having a dog who's allergic to many things.

Dogs dont need carbs in the same way which we do, that I know but  im afraid I cant expand on this any further though ..................Tohme ?????? :)

Thanks everyone, maybe I should have re-worded the "carbs" ;) but what I really meant to say was what sort of Veggies, could I use or any other supplements that will not cause further yeast build up or inflame the problem.  I don't like the idea of life time meds for the Malesezzia and would like to try a more friendlier approach if at all possible, but if meds are needed then that is what my girl will have :)

Making notes of all your kind responces, much appreciated.

Took my dog back to the vets with an outbreak again and she has given me Nizoral tablets today and told me to use the caneston cream with it.
It is the plain caneston you want.
