Ok I know I have made a huge mistake and PLEASE DONT TELL ME WHAT I HAVE DONE WRONG I KNOW, I just need advice,

I own a 10yr old Bloodhound X bitch and about 8mts ago I brought a 1yr old Lurcher dog (G/Hound X Saluki), both are still entire, the bitch hadnt had a season for 2yrs before the Lurcher came,

However the other week there were the tell tail signs, few drops of blood on the floor, paying lots of attention to the vulva etc etc, I knew she was in season and seperated her from the dog, however when I went out I bundled the both in my van, not realising that 1) at her age she would mate him, 2)not in a small van and 3)that living with her he probably wouldnt bother,

When I got back they were both in a frenzised state, so I am guessing the obvious has happened, so now what do I do? This happened at 10pm last night, is it likly that at her age she will whelp? Will she be ok, she is very healthy although a bit stiff these days. Needless to say they have been seperated now,

Not what you want to hear but take your bitch to the vet ASAP for the pregnancy to be terminated she is far too old to be having a litter

you say 'the other week' how long ago was it exactly and why didn't you do something about it before?,  it may not be too late for a termination or at worst have her spayed.  If you don't,  there is a good chance your girl will die during whelping, you haven't said if this would be her first litter, but if it is you are definitely in BIG TROUBLE!!

GET HER TO THE VET BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!  :-(

Don't panic, but phone the vet NOW and make an emergency appointment for the 'morning-after' injection. Alternatively book her in to be spayed. She is far too old to have a first litter (by about 6 years) so leaving things to take their course is out of the question.

The downside with the injection is that it often causes the bitch to come back into season again straight away, so you would have the whole palaver repeated. Bitches don't have a menopause like humans do - she will keep coming into season for the rest of her life, so you will need to make sure one of them is neutered.

Guest - could they have mated before last night - think carefully and tell your vet if there is any possibility at all they could have gotten together beforehand.

DONT WORRY    you have plenty of time to get her to the vet,
she will need to have a jab on day 3 and 5 after the mating (Mon & Wed)   BUT she will come back into season again, therefore you will need to be very vigilant when she ovulates again. This is your only option because of her age.
The cost of both jabs adds up to apx £50.

As the otehrs have daid you can get her the morning after jab, but personally as this will solve any future problems of this sort I would ask to have her spayed.  sometimes the morning after inje4ction doesn't work and the bitch has one or two pups, at other times it can cause the bitch to have a womb infection a few weeks later (thereby needing an emaergency spay), so on balance, even though spaying at this stage of the cycle is not as simple as mid season, I would opt to have her spayed, especially if she is fit and well.
