I just wondered what peopel thought was best for raising young weaned puppies on these days, as when I got my first dog a few years ago, he came from the breeder (as a 8week old pup) with a diet sheet of weetabix, milk, minced beef and mixer, and rice pudding for supper. When I took him to the vets for his first injection she said to chuck that away and feed him a decent puppy diet like Hills or Pedigree Chum. I just wondered what people generally recommend for pups from weaning up to four to six months old?

I've fed my Labrador, Tally, on Friskies Beta Puppy - that seems to have done him no harm apart from very smelly bottom burps from time to time!!:) Now at six months he has just progressed to Beta Junior - I'm so proud:)

Thaose of you who are experienced with puppy nutrition will know more about this than me. Heard something about some puppy foods being overly high in protein - iams and eukanuba. Came from a Cavalier breeder who thought they could make pups a bit hyper. She had noticed it in a pup and changed its diet to Burns and it calmed down. She spoke to some American friends who said it was common knowledge over there. Perhaps its also the additives in some of these foods. Excess protein and lots of e numbers can do odd things to some humans so maybe its the same with pups.

At work we tend to wean the gun dog type breeds onto eukanuba puppy, and the gsds onto purina puppy, they all seem to do well on it.

I wean my pups onto Febo complete puppy biscuit , which sadly is hard to get in some areas, plus a little Butchers Tripe Mix (tinned). I find it excellent, the puppies all love it and they do very well indeed on it, but it is barely advertised or promoted so few people know about it. If I have a picky puppy or one that does not come on as it should then I feed Arden Grange Puppy which is also excellent and made from very high quality ingredients. It rather depends what breed yours is Louisdog, if its a giant or toy breed, they do need particular diets. Large heavy boned breeds dogs like Labs should be "grown slowly" and not overfed with very high protein/fats which can make them grow too fast at the expense of their joints.
I have normally weaned mine onto mince, then added moist puppy food a week or so later and alternated the meals. Never did give wheatabix or baby foods - couldn't see the point. However my next litter will be weaned directly onto the same raw food that the adults are getting - just more of it!
