Hi, my beautiful girl ( siberian husky) had seven pups two days ago. She had milk days before she gave birth and up until this morning. The pups seem to be crying more than usual and keep going from one teat to another , as if they are not getting any milk and are in search for it. I managed to express some milk before the delivery incase there were any weak pups that needed hand rearing. The milk was expressed very easliy. However when i tried to do the same, nothing is coming out, only occassionaly will i get a mear bit drop of milk and thats with effort.
I have called my vet who is excellent, but he was in theatre. The nurse came on the phone and said, ' Well she must have milk otherwise the pups wouldn't have survived this long and to feed the bitch Carnation Milk'. I feel so silly incase im worried over nothing and she does have milk, how do i know if she does????.
I live literaly 'in the sticks', have no transport, and no family near by, and no vet to come out to me. I rang our taxi company to see if they could take me to the vets, and refused a dog plus a litter in the car (not surprisingly).
Should i be concerned, how can i be sure she has/ hasn't got milk????
Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Joan.

Gently squeezing the breasts below the nipple. Milk should be released? It is not uncommon for a bitch to have milk before the birth, on the whelping day and then for it to disappear on the second day. It normally returns by the third day. Do her breasts feel very hot and/or hard? I am sure others will be along shortly to offer their thoughts.

Guest,
In addition to Amins good advice,
Is your bitch drinking enough?? If she is fed dry complete food then it might be a good idea to give her milk (if she likes it) to make sure she drinks enough. Fennel tea is also very good for helping the milk to come in (I have used this myself ;) )
Are you watching the pups feeding? Are bigger/greedier pups pushing others off the teat before they can feed properly?
Hope this helps some, if not I'm sure someone else will be along with further ideas.
Regards
Dill
