Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Bulldog Puppy Prices

This is more of a question to breeders really, i am intrested in all bull breeds of dog, but recently saw in the press how much Bulldog puppies cost, from as much as £1800 to £2500, now i really do think that, this is a bit of a rip off, kc registrations still cost the same, feeding them costs the same as any other puppy, and as with some other breeds they sometimes need a caesarian section, this still costs the same, but differs from vet to vet cheapest c-section is £250 ( i paid this recently for a bullmastiff and this was in the middle of the night on a Sunday ) highest £500+
How do you explain these prices? or justify them?  I am just curious to know as to why, not that i am intrested in owning this breed, as i think that they cost way to much, i would rather spend my much hard worked for cash on something else..say a well bred Lab which i would expect to pay around £500 + for, so really when pricing these dogs whats the reasoning behind it..is it money?  Or are people paying for this so called "rare" breed, which seems to me not to be no so rare anymore, theres nine Bulldogs that live in the street where i live, all owned by different nieghbours.
Who some of them "surprise surprise" are hoping to breed from, this is what is happening people are being charged all this money for a dog, and in some way hoping for a return on the dog by breeding from them, it dont matter that the kc registrations are being endorsed by some breeders, as they are still being sold out there for £900 + which is still to high in my opinion and thats for an unregistered dog !
So truthfully, why do they cost so much??? i know about all the problems they can have whelping, but not all bulldogs do have these problems, some can self whelp, i have known this happen.  So how really can you justify that amount of money for a Bulldog Puppy?? They cost no more than any other breed to rear, or register by the kc, and truthfully if you are using the cost of a puppy to cover a c-section and other expenses, thats the wrong reason to be breeding any breed of dog in the first place.

As with anything...it is supply and demand. Breeders can only charge what people will pay! ;)

I own Bulldogs and think they are wonderful BUT" i have to agree with you about the price
I have been going on about the very high price tag for ages only because as you have just said
people are buying them just to breed and make money out of the poor females which will have litter after litter.
I dont breed more than one litter every 3 years and i have two females that are nearly ready
but i cant do it as i cant ask the high price tag?
if i sold cheaper no matter how i check people out i could have one that buys cheaper then resells at the high price which has happened already with some other breeders / and i do endorse all my pups/ i dont like taking my Bulldogs out as you get people stop you to ask if you have any pups or want to know where you live it is no fun walking them and you need to make sure that no one has followed you home,, just madness.....Someone was selling pups for £2500 and has sold them !!!  i just cant believe it......

Sad thing is that the people who are charging that sort of money are probaly selling an inferior product anyway. All the breeders I know have waiting lists for the next 2 or 3 litters and do not charge those sort of prices, mind you they are very careful who they sell to and having taken the best of care to produce healthy dogs they are not keen on having them bought by someone who will use them to produce a less than well thought out litter just to make money. The other thing that may have a bearing on the price is the expected number in the litter, both those born and those making it to 8 weeks. In all breeds the last number is lower than the first. The expence is more or less the same whatever the litter size.

PS: don't think the recent TV programe has helped it seems to have increased their popularity.

Noticed an ad in our local Admart from someone 'desperate for a bulldog puppy, even the runt will do, willing to pay up to £100'! Mmm, good luck!
