Hi all
I am not a fair weather walker BUT my dogs are!! It seems that every time I get ready to go out the heavens open....so how are the rest of you  getting on? My boys refuse to go out in the rain and hence have been drastically 'under exercised' in the last week or so but what can I do?

I know what you mean, I have to drag mine out when its raining.  they dont mind if the ground is wet, its only when it is actually falling from the sky that they seem to complain.  Yet on a nice hot sunny day the first thing they do is head for water for a lovely long swim :D  Its showery here today so we have walked in between them and I am hoping that this evening will be better :) Sarah

I just take them out anyway, once out they soon don't care.  the only thing I do ensure is not to walk them in the heat of the day this time of year.

We go out 4 times a day whatever the weather :D The more it rains, the more they like it - older one goes quite berserk if it's windy or very wet - starts digging up the path :D If it's very hot we just go slowly and don't go as far, although the older one still insists on having his ball thrown :D If he lies down, then he's had enough and we go home :)

My dogs hate the rain as well.   I did get them out yesterday, I don't know if anyone else gets this problem, but mine always pull me downhill, I wouldn't mine if it was uphill, I could sometimes do with a helping paw!!     Because it was wet and slippery (down I went for the fourth time).     They won't be the only ones who don't want to go out in the wet weather soon!

Maddie loves the wind blowing in her face, walks with her head held high! Missie, on the other hand, walks with her head almost tucked between her front legs :) One of these days she will walk into a lamp post :D

Weather is ignored in this house. BTW Ive solved the downstay in the rain thing now, without resorting to Pocket Pilchards thank goodness.:) Anyone elses dog get high when the wind is strong?

Well maybe I'll just have to drag the lot of them!! Asa refuses to even step over the door step if its raining...so much fo having a weather proof fur coat!

Took mine out today with little trollboy, we went on a lovely walk around the lake, once you start there's only really one way to go - all the way round :D so what happened?  we get half way round and the heavens opened BIG TIME  within seconds we were all soaked to the skin :(  my trusty all-weather terrier (not) spent the rest of the time alternately checking the lake (to see if it was drier in there lol :D ) and crying because he was sooo wet.  By the time we got back to the car my shoes were full of water (i had to empty them) and even my waterproofs had failed.  Poor trollboy was in the same state and my poor terrier looked as if he'd just had a bath   good job I carry a big dog towel, dog rug and people rug in the car.  Had to towel child and dog, rug them up and then drove home still sopping wet as the towel wouldn't hold any more water :( Can't think why he wouldn't come out with me tonight - it was only a light shower this time :D

toby loves the rain.he will go what ever the weather inc thunder/lighting i have never known a dog like it.he will lay on the drive when its throwing it down and just looks at me as if to say "so".it's me who doesn't like it not him. lol. but we do get an empty field when its raining all to ourselfs.people must look at me and think "look at her, must be mad". our old dog a boxer wouldn't cross the door he used to run out a quick wee and back if he was desperate.
funny how they vary from 1 breed to the next.
i wish i had some of his coat i wouldn't mind as much then, its usually me that comes in like a drowned rat, then get wet again drying him.

When it is raining and I put Sky's harness on....she looks at me with those brown eyes and hangs her down and walks to the door like a right huffy wee article.....we get about 300 yards from the house up the lane towards the fields and she has a quick pee and the just stops dead and will not go any further and then when you head for home she trots along like there was nothing wrong....wee rat bag!

my four dogs walk whatever the weather, I only have to go to the drawer to get something or open the coat cupboard and they are all waiting as if they haven't been out  for days.

As a dog walker (by trade) I have to go out all weathers, mind you have been quite successful as dodging the showers so far this week!!!
- By cafe [gb] Date 18.08.04 21:22 UTC
my 2 labs want to go out what ever the weather.
- By ManxPat [im] Date 18.08.04 21:51 UTC
I don't have a bad weather problem, my labs love the rain and will source out a body of water anywehere. But when it's last thing at night for a pit stop before we go to bed they behave like they have perms to protect.

Rain, wind, snow, ice, is not a problem. Our problem is when the weather is good and I have to restrict walks and outdoor pursuits until evening - the dogs suffer so much in the heat, and mine are black so heat absorbption is the main enemy.

If it is raining hard outside my puppy doesn't want to go in the yard to do her business, but if she happens to already be out playing when the weather turns bad it makes her so hyper...She loves it when the wind picks up and it makes things blow around for her to chase and she too will just lay out in the rain when she is done going mad...When we first had her it rained for the first time since she had been at our house and she went so nuts, running fast in circles around the garden and in and out of the house I had to intervene in the end and slow her down cuz I thought she was going to run into something or slip and hurt herself...

If we are out walking on the beach and the sky gets grey just before it rains she also gets so excited chasing up and down all happy...I think she just loves the movement the windy weather brings and the rain on her back is just a trip to her...When it was real hot for those couple weeks it was a bit miserable because I had decided not to walk her in the heat of the day cuz I thought her ears may get sunburn or something plus she just slept anyway all day long till the evening came and it cooled down then it was playtime!...She has snow dog ancestry and so I think she definitly loves the cooler weather.

I have to say also that because our main walk is taken on our local beach we did not appreciate all of the fair weather visitors!...We have a couple of holiday camps and what with kids being on summer holiday and the good weather our beach was swamped with people packed on it like sardines :( my pup has been used to running and playing off leash but one day she saw a child digging this massive hole in the sand and she wanted to join in to help as she loves digging and it scared the child who was old enough to know she was playing but he took off screaming so loud and crying as if she was going to kill him...the thing was though that she loves to play chase too and she thought it was part of the same game of 'I will help you dig, then I will chase you'! but that boy would not stop running and my puppy would not either, finally he did stop on the advice of his parents and Keena low and behold completly lost interest and came running back to me...Since that day to avoid anything like that she had to go on the lead when it was that packed and she so could not understand why and it didn't seem fair so I quit going to the beach and we had street walks instead, not her fave cuz she loves to play and be free but I guess it is good lead training all the same.  But still Keena and I can not wait till all the tourists bugger off back home and we get our beach back!...lol

We both (my puppy and I) have to agree with each other that we are quite fond of the rain also because it does chase said tourists away and we love having the run of the outdoors all to our selves and maybe a few other mad dog owners who enjoy the same thing!  There just isn't enough wide open free space in the south east of England and although I understand that dogs are not everyones favorit and that some people are just scared I do get a bit fed up with some adults and kids alike thinking that my just turned 5 month old puppy with only half of her teeth due to teething is going to savage them. To me and other people who like dogs she is just the cutest but with some people it's honestly like they have never seen a puppy before!  So we arn't really that anti social we just like to have fun on our walks and sometimes that means that everyone else should be indoors all by a couple other dogs for Keena to play with.  We seriously are considering moving some place more remote like Scotland because I think we would all have such fun with proper country to run in.

Yay for rain!
