Well Tess went for her last jab tonight and she meet a Great Dane (who went to puppy training class with Sal), his tongue was almost as big as she is :) she obviously did not think dogs came that big, but she was very very good and when he licked her, she licked him back. :D

Well Chloe after being almost flatten by this one who decided to rest his paws on my shoulders when I stood up. I have to say you are a braver woman than I :)
His owner said he must have remembered me from when he was a pup (and we went to the same puppy group). And maybe he did because he was estatic when he saw me, maybe it was a lot of "memory joggers" for him, the vets where we went for puppy class, a Staffie pup and me.

They are gorgeous dogs though and boy are they big :D

how big are danes? what is the standard? the few i have had contact with seem small in height are they classed as giant breeds?
what is the nature like? if you can compare to a leo as it will give me a better idea of size.
not many around here or on the park are the silver ones classed as blues?

This one is a blue and boy is he  big. I'd say about 30" to his shoulder maybe more. And he apparently weighs 119lbs

sound like a leo in height, tob is around 65kg which i think is approx 150lb. but he should get bigger yet in weight.
i though they were blues!
how big are they in the body length? any idea? tob is approx 36" from withers to tail base.
they remind me of boxers in their general shape.

i have just looked on the kc site danes are a bit smaller than leo in height and around 20 kg in weight.
i 1 i have seen didn't seem that tall.he was a fawn male that lived on my parents street.
do the blue ones have light eyes too?

Willis is around 32inches I think and weight - around 15-16stone and growing :D Phoebe is 11 stone at the moment and she's not 2 yet.

I must admit that, imo, although St Bernards, Newfies, Leos etc appear to be big dogs, a lot of it is down to the long, thick coat. A giant smooth-coated breed, like a Dane or a Mastiff, where you can easily see the condition and the rippling muscles, impresses me more.

sorry your right i did mean leos are approx 20kg more than danes by the standards.
missie has seen my lad at a show once,leo's are the same very slow to get the brains and mature.(esp) mine.he can sit there for 2/3 mins before he has clicked that i have said his name.

Good, well bred Danes are formidable animals. They are the true Giant Breed, but have to mature slowly. You don't see that many fully grown males around because, frankly, they can be a challenge to control. Infact, I find it easier to take the horses for a walk LOL :d :D

A large transit van was parked outside the vet's last week - the whole of the back was a giant cage and it had at least two danes in it. The side doors had been left open, but the cage was firmly padlocked :) I thought that it would be better tho', to have a horse-box :D

Marie, the minimum height for a dane over 18 months is 76cm (KC)
the mininmum height for a leo over 18 months is 65 cm (LCGB)
Minimum weight for a dane 18 months is 54 kg (KC)
Minimum weight for a leo 18 months is 40 kg (LCGB
Info taken from Kennel Club, Leonberger club of Gt Britain.

Dont know what the maximum weight at 18 months for a great dane is but for a leo its 75kg and height max 80 cm

i know the leo one,just went on kc and compared size as adults.
i didn't know there was stages heights and weights are the age group.
so what is 76cm in " ? can't find my tape measure....lol
toby is 18 end of sept but he is over 65 kg now in weight.and i think he is 32". i will  have to find that measure it will give me a idea what he is for age other than daft.
is the 40kg at 18 for the girls? that sounds low for a boy.

76cm equals 30 inches.

To measure a dog accurately you need a wooden measure with a right-angled batten to sit on the withers. Alternatively (and less accurately) you stand beside the dog and someone else marks the height of the withers (squashing down the coat) on your leg. Then you take the dog away and measure from the mark to the floor.

Please take care this thread doesn't turn into a "My dog is bigger than your dog" bore! ;) Bigger is not necessarily better ...

wasn't intened to. just to give me a idea against a leo as i have one.plus i can then find out if he is approx right size etc for age.i have found the article that is in the club newsletter that missies was talking about.but i have never seen or met danes that size (other than) chloe h as she seen me a pic of willis.
toby is a big lad but his size is what ever it will be in the end i just wish he had a brain the same size to go with it.

i know leo and danes just wondered how many giant breeds there are even if you don't see them alot.

I think what are known as 'giant' breeds are what the KC classifies as 'Extra-large'. That includes Irish Wolfhounds, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Mastiffs, newfoundlands, Leos, Danes, St Bernards, Tibetan Mastiffs, Neos, Estrelas and Pyreneans.
