I have two standard poodle bitches that greet people they love carrying a cuddly toy , why do they do this .We think its their way of showing affection ,like they are bringing you a pressy . Just curious.

Their probably satisfying their natural urge to retreive.
I have a dog who will fetch a toy when people arrive. I think it is some sort of displacement activity - she is very excited but knows she is not allowed to jump up on people so she grabs a frisbee, ball, etc. and runs around until the initial thrill of 'new' people wears off.
I agree with Shadowboxers' theory, my hound always does this with me now, but doesn't choose....or rather, hasn't been trained enough to do this with all visitors yet.
:)

My Beardie girl did this as did her Granny. I always thought it was just her way of saying hello

Phoebe always runs off and fetches a ball. Willis just flattens you against the wall  :D
Chloe H LOL
My beagle Cal does this comes out of his crate with a toy and runs rounds with it squeaking with happiness.
He only does this with me mind, think he sees me as chief beagle.
Its really funny.
He also carries fav toys out to the car and will bring them back indoors again when he leaves the car, again really funny....and cute!
