my 5 month old springer spaniel seems to have quite prominent knobbly knees on his front legs is this normal? he is a farm bred springer no pedigree or anything, both parents working dogs of stocky build. They dont seem to bother him at all and dont effect his movement. The only reason i ask this question is that a friend has a springer and she doesnt seem to have the same prominent knees. Can anyone help?

The knobs are there until he finishes growing.  I have heard it refered to as the knob of greoth or having to grow into his knees etc.  anyway perfectly normal for a 5 month old pup would be worried if he didn't have them that he would be weedy and had stopped growing.

I've been told by breeders that this is how to tell that the pup has more or less stopped growing.  When the knobblyness can't be felt anymore the pup has finished growing :)  my guess would be that your friends springer is older and perhaps not growing anymore.  I found it was true with my dog but its a terrier.  Of course it could be an old wives tale......;)
