Hi all
My Gordon girl is currently undergoing tests for every allergy we could think of, the results are due back on Mon or Tues hopefully. Well I was talking to a lady who is adament that microchipping her boy caused bald patches that are slowly clearing up since the removal of the offending microchip. Her boy has never had any problems before.
My OH and I thought about this and it got us thinking that Mads didn't really have any problems until about a couple of weeks after she was done. We noticed the sore ears about the same time that we noticed her microchip had migrated to her chest and we were kinda wondering if there was any connection. (I know some people are allergic to certain metals, so I thought the same could be said for dogs) I suppose we will find out in due course, but like I said I just wondered if anyone else had any bad experiences with microchips.
Thanks for any help

Hi there
She was chipped when she was given her second injection at 12 weeks, she is now 16 months and has suffered terribly from sore ears itchy paws and hotspots since then. She was perhaps just too young before for these allergies to show up. I am at the moment clutching at straws as I wait for the test results to come back. She was chipped by our vet and it is a Bayer Tracer product. We are thinking along these lines as we kept her food the same, the only thing that changed was her water. It's not even as though she was kept outside at her breeders and then brought inside. It could well be that I'm not as good at housework and it's dustmites or something really silly like that.

It could be a grass or pollen allergy, or a food allergy. I hope the tests show up something. A lot of dogs are allergic to wheat and wheat gluten - so it might be worth trying a dog food that is gluten free.
Just some thoughts.

It is more likely a reaction to the vaccine than the chipping.

ersonally I do not chip my dogs they are tattooed and I certainly would not want to chip AND vaccinate my dogs simultaneously.
I always recommend thuja post vaccination to reduce the risk of side effects and would urge people if you want to insert yet another foreign body into your dogs leave a gap between vaccination and microchipping.

Alli, run a search on microchips. You will find some very interesting threads debating this issue.
