We have a 10 year old japanese chin who is blind due to cataracts. Can anyone advise us as to whether surgery would be beneficial for this breed of dog and costs plus where it can be done - we live in the West Midlands. Many thanks. John Kubow

Your own vet will refer your dog for treatment, to one of the veterinary eye specialists. It could mean a lot of travelling. Your best course of action is to discuss this with your vet and perhaps go to an eye testing session where a veterinary opthalmologist is testing eyes. They would be able to give you a detailed answer as to whether it will be worthwhile, and whether it will improve things for your dog.
Having said that do remember that dogs use sense of smell as much if not more than sight to get around anyway.

I have to say, after having two Labradors go blind that some dogs cope rather better than others. One of mine you would never have known was blind but the other walked into everything.

As Polly said, you will need to get refered to a specialist. Also bare in mind that the removal of cataracts from the canine eye is rather more complicated than from a human eye.

Polly and myself spent quite a bit of time in years gone by raising money for equipment to remove cataracts!

Best wishes, John
