Topic Other Boards / Foo / Indigo has been very poorly :(
- By LJS Date 10.08.04 20:09 UTC
We have had a bad few days as our little Indi has been in hospital.:(

She was fine Friday morning as happy and chirpy as normal so off she went to nursery. That lunchtime we got a call to say she was not herself and was constantly crying and could they give her some Calpol. I said not to worry and we would come and get her.

That afternoon her temp soared to 39.9C and she developed a swelling on her neck. We took her to the GP and he said it was probably a virus never mind I am sure it will get better.

By 11pm her neck was so swollen and her temp wouldn't come down even with Calpol and Nurofen so we called the emergency Docs. Answered questions for ten mins and they concluded that she need to go to hospital asap so off we went.

She was admited and after five of us (three Docs and me and Mike) held her down to get a drip in she was admited and put on 2 lots of IV antibiotics. She didn't sleep for the next 48 hours as she was in so much pain and distress but finally she started to turn the corner. She pulled out four drips even though we were trying our hardest to stop her. They failed so many times to get them in , she is like a pin cushion :( . We said enough is enough and we said that she must have the antibiotics orally as the trauma she went through to have the drips put in were horrific. I have never seen anything like it my poor little girl. One of the surgeons suggested bandageing her hands up  :(

Anyway she is home, still has a temp and still has a very big swelling on her neck so we are keeping a good eye on her and are due to go back to get her her reviewed to see what happens next as she may have to have it removed if the antibiotics don't shift it.

They have said it is an infection of her lymph glands which is normal in children of her age ? She is just one and I have never seen or heard of anything like what she has gone through ? Anybody else experienced anything like this ?

Lucy

That's awful - poor Indigo and poor you :( It's terrible when they are that age - a bit like the dogs - they can't tell you anything and you can't tell them anything :(

Hopefully she'll be fine very soon - they usually bounce back very quickly :)

Hope that you are getting some rest

Poor girls :( Luke (now 28) had a lump come up on his neck when he was 10 ...it came up overnight and HE ended up in hospital as they had no idea what it was...they gave him 24 hours of antibiotics intravenously and were about to operate when, at last, his temperature went down and the lump started to stop grow.

They never found out what it was and he has never had a recurrence

Hope Indi is fully recovered soon

Oh Lucy, that sounds awful! You must all be so worried. It's so very distressing to see them like that, and you can't explain to them to keep still. Flo must be very upset too. Give them both a hug, and your hubby too of course.

Sending you as many healing thoughts as I can.

My son at age 3 I think had a big golf ball swelling on his neck it turned out to be a cold that went back wards and caused his lymph nodes to swell, that was the back of the neck on the sides kinda. He was in the hospital on IV for about 2 weeks all of easter holidays...Then in the winter this year in the front of his neck kinda on the side his lymph nodes swelled again he is now 9. I was told that in some children when they get a cold they do swell and should go down in about 2-4 weeks and if not then of course go see the doctor which we did, but they went down :) Still scarry stuff.

Do hope your lil one feeling better :)

Thanks everyone for your kind words. She is a lot better today and we have had lots of smiles so she is getting back to her normal self. She still has a very big hard lump on her neck and still  is having temp spikes but we are on top of it .

I think the worse thing is when they can't tell you what is wrong and also that she didn't understand that all the nasty things were being done to make her feel better !

Glad to hear Indi is feeling better Lucy, isn't it just every parents nightmare, I hope the temperature is levelling off a bit now :)

Hope you and man are settling down after your ordeal, Lucy. Indigo is a tough wee cookie fighting off ham fisted doctors and infections with determination, must be all the crawling around with the dogs she does, immune system like a steel trap. Best wishes.
