Tonight my friend's young black lab, Bobby was PTS after ingesting rat poison last Thursday. Our dear kind vet did his best to save him, then ended the misery kindly with Bobby surrounded by his family. We think he picked it up near a burn on the estate and being a walking Hoover just swallowed it quick before his Dad or the other 2 dogs got it off him.. He was 18 months old, was a lively lad who loved running on the worktops, chewing steel toecap boots and stealing Chinese takeaways. He loved life. His first owner tried to strangle him so he always had a raspy throated bark, and my chum took him in the same day. What Bobby went through I will never forget and will be paying MUCH more attention to food refusal from now on in training.

So if you are exasperated with your young dogs tonight, please remember Bobby and call them over for a pat. None of us know how long theyll have with us. Next doors garden is awful quiet now and we miss Bobby.

Oh I'm really sorry Lorelei, how awful :( and still only a baby.
I knew rat poison was dangerous, but didn't realise it was fatal.

it makes you think  and not to take any of them for granted like we do.even though some pets are pains some times it makes you sit and think.
sorry to hear this horrible news,i also  check the garden regular just in case as you never know.
pups will pick up and take things from any one but i won't allow it to try and get them to only take of certain people i know will never harm them.

I'm so sorry Lorelei what a terrible thing to happen :(  Nothing can prepare you for a death even when you have weeks of warning. I remember last year my wheaten terrier died of kidney Disease and the vet gave us warning two weeks before. Then one night she was lying under the table and we heard the chair shaking and we thought she was just scratching until my dad looked and shouted ' she's having a fit' we then had to take her in the car to the vets. Half way through the journey she lost her sight so we did our best to stop her feeling scared. She died wrapped up in a blanket with me, my mom, my dad and my brother all stoking her and whispering goodbye in her ear. When the vet gave her the injection, she had a big stretch and a sigh and closed her eyes. She was so peaceful and in a way that made it easier for us to say goodbye.
Anyway hope you can continue to love the dog that was there, and not miss the dog that's gone.
My best thoughts go out to you and your family.

Very sad news - and there are no words that make the pain any better.

That's really sad, at least he had a good life for a while and had lots of fun. I don't know the ins and outs of poisons but surely it must be illegal to just leave the stuff around where other animals can get to it? People who handle poison have to be very responsible surely.

As you say, it's so important to really appreciate our dogs as we never know when they will be taken from us.

I am so very very sorry to hear off your friends such sad loss. I cant imagine what you must be going through. Only the other day out walking my lots trying to miss the broken glass smashed on the pavement I noticed a small bag of green powder ripped open god knows what it was one off my youngest noticed it aswell and went to pick it up, thank god I got there before her. It makes me so angry that people will carelessly dispose off glass and poisons and not spare a thought for animals and children. Again I am so sorry.

I send my condolences and prayers to your friends and you. I'm so terribly sorry to hear that about such a young dog and what he went through too with his previous abuser owner. Such a sad time. It does indeed make us think and that's a good thing.
