Has anyone any experience of the Scilly Isles, either through living or visiting there, I think I am having a mid life crisis (only 33 but pregnant with third child! :D ) and someone suggested moving there, apparently the weather is good, but I am more concerned with living costs, price of houses (which seem to be very elusive!) and the general community spirit, particularly for the children, would they get to 15 and want to desperately escape?!
Any thoughts gratefully received....
Hayley

Never been, but I'd love to go for a holiday. Very 'Thousand Acres of Sky' to think of living there. :D

I've been there a couple of times, though not for about 10 years now (I have various relative in Cornwall, some in Penzance which is where you catch the ferry to St Mary's). The weather seems to be better than on the mainland (which is a very good thing IMO :D ) Every time I go to Cornwall the weather is lousy! I can't answer many of your questions except for the fact that I was about 13 -14 last time I went and I was fairly bored after just a day there - though my parents were into sightseeing which didn't really appeal to me - I'd be far happier left to my own devices to explore the Islands :)
Friends have relatives living there who are try to move to the mainland. It was mentioned that things like nappys and food are very expensive and you have the added cost of leaving the Island.

We spent a couple of weeks there a while ago now it is a fantastic place miles of empty beaches. We were very lucky with the weather too, there was a drought at the time.I wouldn't want to live there though its too cut off!

They are indeed very beautiful Islands. The house prices are astronomical and rising. Lots of locals can't even afford to purchase their houses either and I believe they have been lobbying the government to help rectify this.

My mother lives on the Isle of Wight and it is bad enough trying to get there sometimes to visit - and expensive - and not so good when she is ill !! Also, most children seem to leave the island just as soon as they can. Shopping there isn't too bad and it's easy to get over to Portsmouth or Southampton - not so sure about the Scilly Isles though. I'd think long and hard before doing it :)
