Hi there,

Can I just ask those of you that have bitches (especially those with arctic breeds) a quick question - I'm wondering roughly how long after your bitch blows their coat, that they come into season? (if they do come in after blowing it)

Thanks :)

(A couple of people have already said that one bitch was 2 weeks after, and the other usually 3-4 weeks - I was just wondering if I could get a wider response)

I always thought of the coat blowing after the season, usually about 3 to 5 weeks after the season, the coat change takes about 8 weeks and that leaves about 3 months before the next season, but bitches do differ and it is likely that so do breeds.

Like Jackie H, I've always heard that bitches blow their coat after being in season!

My (smooth-coated) dogs are all moulting like good'uns in this hot weather.

Mine blows before her season, usually 3-4 weeks before. Not an arctic breed though.

Glad I am not the only one with a floor looking like it has snowed JG :D

I think in the majority of breeds they are supposed to come into season whilst in full coat, though from the people I have spoken to about this - it doesn't always seem to be the case. Our bitch is 11 months (almost) and has just started to blow her coat, we're booked up to go away for the bank holiday weekend and I am wondering whether or not to cancel :) This will be her first season.

Hi Ice cosmos,

My Malamute bitch ALWAYS blows her coat aprox two weeks before her season starts.

Mine don't blow at all because they don't moult :d  Not that I'm rubbing it in or anything !!

My Mal bitch has just gone 4 weeks, before her season started. :)

She now has a fantastic coat :D

My baby came in season 2nd of April and has just finished moultingat the end of Julyu, but what so you think she has done, came in season again at East of England, so is just finishing her second season!!!  She went 15 1/2 weeks from start of one to start of other and both look like proper grown up seasons.

I have had this happen with one or two of her ancestors and the pattern gradually settled into around 17 week intervals, but anything from 26 to 32 weeks is not unheard of in this household.

I am just hoping it doesn't bring her mother in season too soon, as her planned mate will be away in Ireland between 13th and 23rd August.  She isn't due in season until at least middle of August, but who knows with bitches, especillay when entries for shows are closing and money been paid out :D

So the answer is usually drop coat bout 2 month after a season unless they decide otherwise :D
