Topic Dog Boards / General / £550 .. too much for a Border Terrier ?
- By Simmo [gb] Date 16.04.02 11:56 UTC
Looking for a border terrier breeder in the Kent area and the only one i have found so far is asking £550 for a dog.Is this too much for this breed or is this the going rate these days? Many thanks
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 16.04.02 12:37 UTC
It does seem top price but may be the puppy is a top pup from proven parents. Is it from show or working stock? JH

I know of a lovely litter due but in Lancashire and the price is £300 I think but contact the Border terrier club and ask their advice re: breeders near you Secretary :01628483240

I sympathise with you, we had this same problem when looking for our BT pup, have you tried all the regional BT clubs? or BT rescue, as even if they don't have anything themselves, they may know of someone with pups or a young dog, do a search for 'border terrier rescue' good luck, and I hope you find one soon. Don't be like me though and become impatient so take the first available, we were very lucky it has worked out and she's lovely (it is hard to keep a level head when you have a beautiful pup licking your cheek and saying 'take me home' with their eyes!), but it's always best to wait for the ideal pup for you.

I think normal price for BT's is about £300-£450 dependant on thier lines £550 does seem a bit over the top for the breed , but it does depend on the lines.
if you only want it as a pet it is a lot to pay for one of the breed, people who are showing may pay this for a good example of the breed:)

My friend has Borders she doesnt show now she has a farm, some years ago just for the hell of it she entered her Dog In a big champ show she got first and the dog ticket, everyone was gobsmacked all wanted to know where this dog had come from, she went to quite a few more taking some thing like 18 firsts and another ticket she said if she could get the top honours at one of the terrier shows she would retire him,she did and never showed him again, her borders are fantastic absoloutley correct, she never asked bad prices for them in fact gave my other friend hers for nothing.she doesnt breed much now.

Hi Simmo

£550 is over the top for a BT. I breed BT's and have never ever considered charging over £450 for a bitch and that is from top quality show lines.

I was recently contacted by someone who had been asked £650 for a puppy and was able to put her in touch with a chap who is expecting a litter again from good quality show lines, and he charges the same as I do.

I'm afraid that because of the popularity of the breed at the moment some people are jumping on the bandwagon and being greedy, my advice to you would be to contact any of the breed club secretary's and they will give you names of breeders in your area. I would say though that you will probably have to wait for a pup as most reputable breeders have very long waiting lists. If you put your name down with a few breeders you stand far more chance of getting a pup that has been bred with the right criteria in mind i.e. temperament, looks, quality and not one that has been bred just to supplement someones income.

If you e-mail me direct I may be able to put you in toiuch with some breeders near to you.

regards

Jayne

Sorry if this is a stupid question but what dictates a breed being popular at any one time ? I know breeds can be popularised by shows like Crufts or a certain breed appearing in an advertising campaign. I don't think this applies to the B/T at the moment so why does everyone suddenly want one ?
(Yes, I know that they are wonderful but that doesn't explain this current trend as they have always been wonderful !)

Well you don't watch as much telly as me, there is the advert with the douge De Bordeux who has a friend who is a Border! :D
- By hugen [gb] Date 17.04.02 05:40 UTC
Now I'm intrigued. What advert is this ? Don't know much about dogue de bordeaux and would like to see one. (Sorry admin, this is going off subject, I know)

It's a washing powder ad that's usually on in the advertising break for a soap opera that used to be based around a farm!!

confused??????

Thank you Leigh.
They look like really magnificent dog(ue)s !

I fell for the breed in 1976 at my only visit to Crufts as a child of 12! I have never owned one, but might one day! They seem to be popular with Elkhound owners, as a number of owners breeders have/had both breeds!

When I asked other terrier owners what these little brown dogs were some were quite scathing, saying 'oh those little mongrelly things aren't proper terrriers', and here they now are one of the more popular terrier breeds. Maybe it was the one in all creatures great or small, and the fact that they are generally more dog sociable, and don't need quite the coat care of the highly trimmed terriers, that they have become so popular.

I am rather fond of wire Dachs too, but must say I prefer the continental working type that are leggier with chests only to the elbow!

It is strange that they are suddenly so popular though. For the record, we got Elsa the border terrier because it has been a dream of mine since I was a child to own one, as family friends had two when I was little, and I wasn't allowed pets (and I've never seen the washing powder ad)!! I had never seen one since, until we got Elsa, and since then I have seen 5 puppies while out walking, there is definitely a BT 'craze' at the moment, though most people still don't know much about them, and almost every day I have someone saying 'mongrel, is she?' and one woman even asked if she was a German Shepherd cross??? we only paid £250 for her because, although KC reg, and from lovely parents, it was an accidental pregnancy, but she is a much loved pet, not a show dog.

<<<and one woman even asked if she was a German Shepherd cross???>>>

"Crikey"!! I'm really trying to get my head around how she came to that conclusion!! ;)

<lookin' at Gus....imagining a BT.....lookin' back at Gus.....scratchin' head.......nope I don't get it!!> :D

Well I had a discussion with someone the other day over what type of dog Holly is. I kept instsiting she's a Cocker Spaniel but they wouldn't have any of it as she's black and "everyone knows Cocker Spaniels are gold". :D :D :D :D :D

I nearly died laughing on that one!!!!

Jacqui,
If I had a dollar for everyone who keep informing me that Chienne is a perfect example of the Minature Labrador Retriever Breed, I'd be very rich. Hmmm, They're basically nuts....

1st) she's a 17lb shorthaired black Cocker/Chih mix --lean with long legs & deep chest. (doesn't look anything like a solid boned 60+ lb lab -- more like a well fed small whippet)

2nd) What Min Lab Ret Breed? No such thing...but I haven't been able to convince anyone of this small, but pertinant fact. Does anyone know of a secret movement to minaturize Labs? John, are you in on this? ;-)

toodles

That's not all, a few years ago,at a car boot I was socialising my then red and white Boxer puppy bitch of 7 months (a very pretty feminine bitch, I might add) When passing 2 mums, pushchairs and various kiddies I heard one say 'ooh look at that vicious Rottweiller', only for the other mum to exclaim 'no it's not it's a long-legged Bulldog'.
Well at this I lost my patience and exclaimed rather loudly 'actually
she's a BOXER AND SHE'S NOT VICIOUS'.

Makes you shudder to think how some people name breeds of dog
and give them bad names.

Jacqui, I know!!! it made me laugh for days!!!, I think the old woman was a bit senile, or blindElsa was only 10 weeks old, so I was carrying her around to get her used to the outside world, and the 'variety of folks' in it!!! :D
