2 days ago Holly ate Action Mans balaclava and has been quite grumpy ever since. She's been off her food, but she will eat biscuits/treats. She also had bad diahrroea yesterday, but this could be down to the fact that she had milk with her breakfast and didn't really eat anything.

She's been really grumpy as well and keeps growling at the children, especially Isabelle and they're the best of friends normal. We've come down on her really hard when this happens and she now knows this isn't acceptable.

She hasn't been sick at all and was clean in her cage overnight so her diahrroea seems to have cleared up.

She's also really lively and still being a little madam!!

Am I over-reacting or could all of these symptoms point to her having a problem? There's no sign of the balaclava yet - will it come out or will the acid in her stomach disolve it?

Thanks,

Fiona

For any of you who know Action Man it was the white fireproof balaclava from the F1 racing driver.

Hi issysmum 4ys ago 1 of my labs started being sick so nothing for 24hr then chicken+rice & evrything fine for few days, then vomiting again, nott much tho. Vet said stay with cchicken+rice for longer. When she went back to normal food again vom. started so of for laparoscopy & they found a plastic container, the kind used in cafe fir individual butters/jam things, by this time it had been going on for about 3wks & they had to open her up. It was embedded in the stomach & ulcerated all around it,took her a long time to recover. Funny thing was she was fine in herself apart from the vomt that only happened around 3/4 o.clock inthe afternoon & only small amount. You should try to see if it comes out either the back way or front way, keep an eye on her because it can cause problems. Another of my labs grabbed a sock & before I could coax him to give it me back he swollowed it. So, after speaking to vet I waited to see which end it would come out,on the 3rd night he threw part of it up.As the night wore on the vom increased & by 6am I was at the vets where he was at the point of collapsing, put on drip & then after a few hrs opened up to get sock out.He was also fine until the 3rd night. I think it can go either way, it can stay inside & never cause a prob or, well it will....
Why don`t you speak to your vet & keep an eye on her? The good thing is you know about it so will be aware of the changes. No it will not disslve, by the way. Hope this helps

I wouldent be to quick to go to the vets.
My pup chewed a button of my mums cardigan last week I found that
a few days later after a quick wash my mum stiched it back.
Must admit told her that I had found it under the sofa ha ha.

I would keep a close eye on her, especially the backend in the hope that it reappears. I have known it take 3 or 4 days for my dogs to pass something they have eaten. That's the part I hate where you have to pick up your dogs poo and look through it  The fact that she has been a bit grumpy and has had the run's may mean it's causing an irritation somewhere possibly as it moves along her intestines but as long as it continues to move and come out tuther end she should be fine.

I took my young male to the vets once because we thought he may have eaten some stuffing from a cushion he had nicked whilst I was out of the room. My vet checked him over but he said he can usually spot a dog immediately who has a blockage because it is often very unhappy, and displaying the usual signs of a blockage i.e. vomiting, off food, can't even keep water down, having the runs or not going to the toilet at all.

As it's been 2 days since she ate the balaclava I would say if she doesn't eat normally today and then go to the toilet normally I would pop her along to the vets just for peace of mind if nothing else.

Let us know how she is. :-)

Morris had an unknown blockage and was in pain for a day a while ago, but soon enough he managed to pass it-a rubber chicken's foot! I would go to the vets if the balaclava isn't passed in a day or so, though just in case.

As you've read previously, Harvey is very good at eating underwear so I wait to see if either pukes it up or passes it.

However, my friend's bc became very ill after swallowing a corn on the cob and an unidentifiable bit of plastic. She hadn't even realised that he had eaten either of them. The cob was definitely in his stomach for 6 weeks as she hadn't eat sweetcorn for 6 weeks. She had an appointment at the vets in the evening as he was looking a under the weather but he took a very bad turn for the worse and luckily, she managed to fit him in at the vets in the morning. On her way, he deteriorated and just managed to get him to the vets on time. They imediately operated and found the cob and bit of plastic in his intestine. He was kept in for a day and a half on a drip.

Don't want to worry you but it is something to watch out for. If you are worried, see the vet.

I've called the vet and he's suggested that we feed Holly chicken and rice and see if she eats it. It could just be that she doesn't want to eat her proper food as it's irritating her stomach, she's on a complete puppy food that's fed unsoaked.

He also wants us to go through Holly's poo to see if it comes out - a job for hubby I think:D :D :D

He's not overly concerned as she's drinking well and hasn't been sick and the diahrroea has dried up now. She's had 2 proper poos today so I suspect she is eating something although not as much as normal. On an average day she'd have pooed 5 times by now!!

I've made an appointment for Holly to see the vet on Friday evening so she can have a checkup and I've got his mobile number incase things get serious overnight. I can't drive and Chris works during the day so he's said that if things get bad he'll get someone to come out and pick me up. What a great vet!!

Thanks for all your advice,

Fiona - and a very miserable Holly who's milking this sympathy thing for all it's worth :D :D

Re corn on the cob - does anyone remember last year Missy swallowed one whole? It never did reappear, and so far (5 months later) she hasn't been sick or sorry for as much as a day........
