I went to my local sainsbury last night and parked opposite a van, in the van was a GSD pup that going by the size was no more than 11 weeks old. Now this van had all the windows tightly shut and the poor thing was crying and howling jumping from window to window, I reported it to the staff in sainsbury who said they had received numerous complaints but even after announcing it over the tannoy no one had come forward!!!! They thought the owner might be in the pub opposite.
This was around 7.30ish which down where I live Poole/Bournemouth area it was still hot, I came back out of the shop an hour later and the puppy was still there. The staff in the end called the police but before they could get there the van was moved that poor pup was locked in the van for nearly two 1/2 hours.
Why do people like that buy pups or any living thing, how I wish i knew who it was they would no longer have a puppy.

I t always amazes me to see people who take their dog to the shops and then lock them in the car while they go in ? Why bother taking the dog at all ?

because some love to go for a ride :)
AND maybe on the way home the dogs get to go for a run?
Mine will sometimes go up the shops with me - but admitably only if I'm nipping in a shop, not doing a long weekly one :) and even then the split rear door window is opened, and side ones slightly to let air through. :)

I wonder if the van details were given to the police i.e. licence plate no? and if the police will do any research.A visit from the local dog warden, police and/or r.s.p.c.a. regarding the complaints should be made to the owner!
If I have to shop or do any errands, where Spice cannot come with me then it means she stays at home, complete with either radio or t.v. and the fan running in the lounge and conservatory!!
Doesn't it make you mad that people like this ever own a dog! Good job I wasn't there because I would probably have broken a window on the van and taken the dog to safety thinking of any consequences later.

Some of us take our dogs to the shops because it is on the way back from their exercise therefore in my case for example the dogs may have been out for two hours already, the supermarket is on the way home and so it makes environmental sense and good use of my limited time to do so..................... If it is hot they are padlocked into their cages with the back open etc etc and they have water in their bolt on bowls and shades draped around the car.
It's not sensible folk like you that cause the problems!
I saw a dog locked in a car recently and like the poster reported to security. My friend and I returned to the carpark after about an hour and the poor thing was still there - we couldn't leave it any longer so rang the police had hoped the security firm might have done that!) . Whilst waitinf for them the owners returned - a 'middle class' elderly couple. I suggested to them that it wasn't a good idea to leave the dog in the car in such hot weather and they verbally attacked me! They had the nerve to say it would be cruel to leave her at home as she would miss them and just swore at me when I pointed out that it was more cruel to leave it in a hot car. He also said they had only been 10 mins - big fat lie - which I pointed out to them! They drove off before the police arrived but we gave the registration number to the police - hope they followed it up.
It's idiotslike this I have a problem with!

:) understand that poppynurse - me and tohme were answering Lel's comment about why do people take dogs in car in first place to shops - we were just pointing out there are some times it makes sense :)
If I were chairman of a chain of stores (lolol) I would have big notices up in all my car parks saying that windows open, water available and dogs not left for more than x amount of time even in those circumstances or the owners would be prosecuted ;)

It really annoys you doesnt it? people treating living things like that? Why get a puppy if you treat it like that, its not fair on the puppy!
I have had a similar situation occur just this last Sunday! My mom and I had just gotten out of our car and were heading towards the entrance to our church building. We were talking quietly and heard a faint cry. We looked over to the parking lot and saw a small dog sitting in the back window of a van. I couldn't believe it, I started to panic. My Mom noted that the van was parked in the shade. That was obviously better than being parked in direct sunlight, but I wasn't going to have it. It was to be a very, very hot day that day and I knew it. But there wasn't really anything I could do about it because church services were going to start any minute and I didn't want to interupt. So like you all, I went inside, hoping for the best.
After an hour, my Mom leaned over to me and told me to sneak outside and check on the dog. So I did. I went right up to the van and was horrified at what I say. Inside was a Pit Bull Terrier male puppy no older than 8 weeks old. The poor boy started to scream and paw at the window when he saw me. He wanted out, really bad. Luckily, it wasn't quite noon yet and so it wasn't too horribly hot. The windows of the van were cracked just about an inch or so. I stuck me fingers inside to see if I could tell the temperature or not. I didn't feel any heat coming through, so I guessed that it was not boiling yet. I stood and talked to the Pit Bull pup for a good five minutes before walking away.
When I walked away, that boy screamed his head off. He was howling, barking, whining, anything he could do, trying to get me to come back. I was going to open the door to the van and let him get some air, but since it wasn't too horribly hot yet, I didn't really have the right to do so. Anyways, I went back inside and told my mom. While everyone was chatting and moving on to their next classes, my mom told me to stand by the window to see if anyone went outside to check on the puppy.
Lucky for the puppy, its family was leaving just after the first hour. I watched to see how he really was when they let him out. They put a collar on him and a leash and let him walk around and have a pee and poo. (I don't believe they cleaned it up... yuck) So, this little terrier got lucky. He didn't have to suffer and boil like some of his fellow dogs have in the past.
Another thing that I wondered about this family leaving the puppy was the fact that this puppy was no older than 8 weeks old. I seriously doubt he was potty trained. The puppy wasn't crated or anything like that. I do wonder what made the family think that the puppy wouldn't soil all over their van. In all honesty, I do hope that one of them sat in puppy poo right on the seat. That way, maybe it'd teach them not to leave the puppy in the car again. =)

It makes me sick. It makes me livid. Don't you just want to break out all the windows when you see this?

A few weeks ago we went to the local Blue Cross dog show and some idiot had left their dog in the car with all the windows up it was reported to the manager who put a call out saying if the dog wasnt removed from the car straight away they would break the windows and do it for them.

This was in our local Paper - Why? So upset when I read this,

Dog dies inside hot car
A DOG died from the heat after it was left trapped in a car all morning.
Two spaniels were left in the vehicle at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park on Tuesday, July 27.
The car window had to be smashed to rescue one dog but the other had already died.
A family left the pets as they went to look round the park and the animals weren't recovered until the afternoon. The RSPCA is now investigating the owners with a view to prosecuting them.
RSPCA spokesman Klare Kennett warned that cars can heat up to oven temperatures. She said: "Nobody should be leaving dogs in cars. People should be aware that they can die very quickly."

It doesmake you :( though. Now in B'ham today it has been hot I do mean "shorts" weather too :)
And I went to the park and because it was so hot left Sal at home. Now we got there on bikes and saw about 14 dogs I have never seen in the park before all being "dragged" around in the boiling 1.00 heat what is wrong with people. Where you your dog rather be in the park being "walked" or in the house/garden relaxing in the shade????? One man actually took his dog back to a boiling hot car to "get cool" luckily someone pointed out this was not a good idea.

It makes me want to go round giving those people fur coats to wear and make them walk around in the blazing sun - see how they like it....

I saw a leaflet recently for Newquay zoo - It states no dogs allowed - unless left in car park

So your average dumb ass owner would probably see this as excusing them for leaving their dog in the car while they spend the day in the zoo! In fact I will make sure it was Newquay and maybe write to them, as this clearly promotes the leaving of the family dog in the car.
