Hello! At Christmas, we were given a blue roan Cocker Spaniel pup aged 9 weeks. He was unwanted by its new family! He is now 6 months old, happy, content and an adorable dog. We love him very much. I would like to do a little research on his background. The previous owner handed over all paperwork with him, including breeding papers and the receipts of what she paid. I wonder if anyone can help me with this.These are the details I have so far ..

He is a lovely dog and I would like to consider breeding from him.

I'm glad you have a lovely Cocker but I would advise you to keep him as a much loved pet - he won't miss what he's never had & breeding from a dog is a huge responsibility, not to be undertaken without a great deal of knowledge about the breed in question. His pedigree details indicate to me that he is the product of several Welsh commercial breeders - the fact he was sold from a kennel in Surrey when he was bred in Wales is confirmation that he came from a puppy farmer/commercial enterprise. Responsible breeders never ever sell to third parties but only direct to the new homes. Gwynmardene in particular is a kennel that produces many, many litters each year - again responsible breeders who care about the breed only have a few litters each year, if that. You are indeed lucky that your boy has a nice temperament - so many Cocker pups from these places do not. His pedigree won't consist of well-known breeding lines though sometimes if you go back a few generations you can find one or two well-known dogs. I'm afraid this will sound harsh but reputable breeders will not be interested in using your Cocker at stud due to the fact that he does not descend from quality breeding lines. I would just enjoy your boy - he is very lucky to have found a nice home after not the best start to his life & you are fortunate to have a happy puppy :-)

Also does he have just a pedigree with ancestors listed, or a registration certificate also? Is this a Kennel Club registration or one from one of a couple of registries used primarily by puppy farmers and dealers, one such is the Dog Lovers registry.

as the previous poster pointed out, he is unlikely to descend from show quality ancestors, but if he by some fluke has some good breeding in the background, he just might have turned out typical, and you might be able to take him to a show and see how he com-pares with his peers.

I would just enjoy him for himself (show at Exemption shows which are run for charity), and if you are interested in showing then attend some shows over the next year or so, especially cocker shows, and see which of the winning kennels type appeals, and also learn about the intricacies of show coat preparation (you will be able to practice on your lad) and in a couple of years you will be perfectl;y placed and knowledgeable enough to make a very informed choice of breeder and parent stock for a puppy to show! :D
