I bought a Cavalier King Charles puppy. He now has Colitis, but the bleeding is getting worse, he now strains and pure blood comes out.

I have just recieved his KC papers, but the name and address or breeder is not the same. It says both Dam & Sire are owned by someone I have never heard of.

The breeder won't do anything about the sick puppy or the wrong papers, and to top it all of I have found a knowledgeable breeder of 30 yrs who is licenced and only breeds one litter per year, she tells me she has had 6 phonecalls from buyers of pups from this dodgy woman, who also have the wrong paperwork and sick puppies.

She has been running two ads, and I phoned them both (they have different landline numbers) same woman answers, she has listed at least 6 litters in 2 months, and I have been informed this is a puppy farming woman. I have let the nice lady pass my number on to anyone else who complains.

What do I do? Who do I report her to? HELP!!!!
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 01.08.04 12:33 UTC
Sorry for the position you find your self in, the woman you bought the pup from is just a handler, however now you have the breeders name and address you can contact them.

The second breeder you talk of is also a bit of a worry, if they only have one litter a year they do not need to be licensed.

The other thing is the condition your pup has may be no ones fault but just one of those things.

Hope the vet can get on top of the condition soon.

Oh dear I don't suppose you saw the parents either ?-sounds like a puppy dealer to me. You can inform the KC as selling though a third party is not allowed & if you have a receipt to show you did not buy the puppy from the breeder a copy of that needs to be send to the KC as well-they did fine & ban two poeple who sold a puppy thorgh a dealer some time back

I don't suppose the KC papers show heart & eye tests either ? There's not alot you can do if neither the seller or breeder accept responsiblity except go to trading standards under the merchantable quality of the puppy

This is why I do urge people to go through breed clubs for puppies

As to the other breeder  I have a friend who breeds danes & she has kept her licence up even though she hasn't had any puppies for a while & has never bred enough litters to warrant a licence as per the lawnever more than two in a year & that was only once 9 months apart-however under the old two breeding age bithces she did & has kept it up every since-doesn't mean she is dodgy tho' just willing to have the council come round to check up
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 01.08.04 15:23 UTC
She insists She is the breeder though.
- By Moonmaiden Date 01.08.04 15:42 UTC
If she is not the person named on the KC docs she is NOT the breeder QED Think you need to contact the KC with details
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 01.08.04 16:31 UTC
Thanks I will.

She told me the pups papers were in her mums name & address as she had recently moved, but a man listed on the electoral role as living with her (with a diff surname) has his name on my pups papers ( a man not her mum!) but with a diff address miles away. I went on 192.com and found she has been at her so called new home at least a year, and the man is listed as living with her the same amount of time, so who knows what is going on!
- By poppynurse [gb] Date 02.08.04 07:33 UTC
You could threaten her with proceedings in the county court if she doesn't take back the pup and refund the money - if you want to give the pup back. I f she doesn't agree you could go ahead and sue - it's not as scary as it seems!
I wonder if the inland revenue know she is selling so many puppies and making money..........
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 02.08.04 08:47 UTC
Good point poppynurse! She told me to go ahead and get a solicitor, but I am sure she is bluffing. So sueing isn't scary?
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 02.08.04 12:21 UTC
Well today after calling the KC I cannot register the puppy in my name. She is now under investigagtion from the council, and she did offer us a full refund this morning. Then she called & changed her mind, and we told her the electoral register has her listed with her partner, (after her lie about her recently moving) and now she wants to take us to court! Well I know I don't want this poor pup returning to people like that. Not once did she call to ask how he was settling in - she hasn't mentioned his welfare at all.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 02.08.04 12:37 UTC
What on earth does she think she can sue you for. Sounds as if you have her on the run anyway.
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 02.08.04 13:08 UTC
She wants to sue us for checking the electoral register! it is publicly available!
- By inca [gb] Date 02.08.04 13:15 UTC
sounds to me as if she lives with a partner but isn't declaring it ?????? perhaps a phone call to the DSS is needed ...it won't help your situation with the pup but might make her think twice about puppy farming again ????? she can't sue you as she has no grounds I'm afraid if that was me i would let her know my plans and see if a refund then arrives ???? or perhaps speak to the local paper ???
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 02.08.04 13:51 UTC
She did offer a refund then called to withdraw her offer. We adore the little chap and don't know what we will do - we want him. I am hoping to get her 2 ad's stopped (she lists them under 2 numbers one is BT, and the other Telewest) in the local paper. It's been running for a while now.
- By Moonmaiden Date 02.08.04 13:16 UTC
Why can't you transfer the puppy into your name ? Did the KC say why ? I reswcued a GSD & got her transferred to me without the previous owners signature no problem

The DSS haven't existed for over two years you should contact the DWP(Dept for Work & Pensions)
- By inca [gb] Date 02.08.04 13:29 UTC
see how much i know LOL I still called it the dole !!!!!!!!!!
- By Moonmaiden Date 02.08.04 13:38 UTC
ROFLMAO when I was a lot younger Supplementary Benefit as Income Support was then called was known locally as PanCrack(money to buy an egg to crack in the pan (LOL))
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 02.08.04 13:49 UTC
They said as the puppies were bred by another person at another address, the only way I can have him in my name is if the man listed on the KC signs the pups over to the woman who claims she is the breeder. But she isn't very co-operative right now.
- By inca [gb] Date 02.08.04 13:50 UTC
check your PM's
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 02.08.04 14:02 UTC
Hi thanks for the msg..can you check yours now?
- By inca [gb] Date 02.08.04 14:11 UTC
very interesting ?????
- By inca [gb] Date 02.08.04 13:16 UTC
i agree Jackie H sounds like she's not got away with it this time ??
- By poppynurse [gb] Date 03.08.04 07:43 UTC
Hi, you don't need a solicitor to bring a case in the county court. The clerk will help you with the application and you pay a fee. She is then summoned to appear and you go along and all sit round a table with the judge and clerk. She gets to answer your claim and you get a chance to speak and then the judge makes his decision. It's quite informal. I've done it twice and won both times - the judge can make an order for her to repay you and if she doesn't do this within the time allowed you can apply to send the baliffs in - they seem to pay up at this point even if they originally say they have no money! They also pay you're costs if you win. Good luck in whatever you decide! Sue :)
- By ange [gb] Date 03.08.04 10:48 UTC
I've read these posts with interest how is the little chap doing.

- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 03.08.04 14:39 UTC
He is still the same even though he is on chicken and rice. I think I may try Naturediet, but I can't order it on the net, so will visit the pet store for it. Thanks for asking.
- By inca [gb] Date 03.08.04 14:53 UTC
glad to hear that ... i bet with all he troubles you have become more fond of him ??? what colour is he ?
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 03.08.04 16:16 UTC
He is Blenheim.

The woman called me and offered me a refund just for the KC papers, but we told her where to get off!
We have contacted trading standards who told us to request a refund in writing. Also 7 more puppies are ill from the litter with this Colitis which to me seems to be more like a heriditary illness? I am told she has more than 3 breeding bitches, and has puppies in the paper all year round. She uses different addresses for the KC papers. I am angry as the KC won't do a thing about her.
I am going to give Inland revenue a call, she is under investigation from the licencing dept at the council, and I hope she gets prosecuted.

We adore him and don't want to return him to her when the time comes.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 04.08.04 02:54 UTC
Blimey that is a big litter for a Cavalier, I would be very suspicious of the truth of the parentage of all 8 pups, as CKCS don't normally have such large litters?
- By Moonmaiden Date 04.08.04 08:40 UTC
Depends on the size of the bitch & her breeding Some puppy farmers have been know to inject a little Welsh Springer into Cavaliers for bigger litter size-met one locally that was obviously not a pure bred Cavalier-was three times the size & obtained froma puppy dealer

One of mine was from a litter of 6 & mum is normal size
- By Cava14Una Date 03.08.04 20:16 UTC
You can order NatureDiet on line HERE

It may be a bit more expensive than pet shop though. I've used them and have been very pleased with service

                    Anne
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 03.08.04 20:41 UTC
Thanks Anne, they don't do it in dry do they?

People say Naturediet lite is best with Colitis, but he is still a pup so which do I go for?
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 03.08.04 16:18 UTC
Thanks Sue!

We will be going all the way on this one. The other puppy buyers are afraid of reprisals but she has to be stopped! I just worry about what will happen to our beloved puppy.
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 03.08.04 16:23 UTC
Guess what? I look in tonights paper and a lady is selling a puppy same age as mine due to her moving. She got it from the same horrid woman, who she purchased two from (Blenheim & Ruby), and the woman insisted on delivering them to her house. She charged £350 each and offered to send papers on for £100 per dog, but she didn't want the papers.
- By inca [gb] Date 03.08.04 20:27 UTC
are you going to sell him back to her ....please don't :(
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 03.08.04 20:40 UTC
We adore him, and want to keep him. I don't know how I can sue her without giving the dog back?

He was born April 19th, and this ladys pup was born April 11th, so she must be having many litters.
- By poppynurse [gb] Date 04.08.04 09:03 UTC
Hi, you could sue for the cost of vet treatment if you want to keep the pup. You could also put in your claim a (large) % of the purchase price as he was 'not of merchantable quality'.
I've spotted this site on the web www.doglaw.co.uk/ why not have a word with them, or try citizens advice - at the end of the day the laws on goods and services apply.
I would be wary of keeping the pup without advice from the vet - is he likely to need lifelong medical treatment or die young? Perhaps the vet would put this in writing to support your claim? I think this could turn out very expensive for you - I know you are attached to the pup but I would think long and hard about the difficulties of keeping a sick animal before deciding to keep him.
Please let us know what you decide and how you get on - I'll be thinking of you! :)
Sue

Hi, Charlie has picked up in the last 24 hours. He only pooped twice! once in the morning and once at night. Usually he needs to go a lot. The stool is still jelly like and there is a spot of blood rather than lots. He has chicken & rice all one day followed by boiled egg and rice the next day. He is now running around like an active cheeky puppy-dog! I have never seen him like this as he is usually sleeping most his day away!

We are going to see how he goes, but will persue this matter via the appropriate authorities (they will deal with her), and will definatley keep him.
- By bullphi [gb] Date 04.08.04 10:15 UTC
Surely, if the paperwork is dodgy, you will also be entitled to some recompense for that.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 04.08.04 16:54 UTC
To say nothing of a good sum for distress, someone recently got £17000.00 because a vet told them their pup had hip dysplasia at 12 weeks old and did not even produce a x-ray plate to prove there was anything wrong with the pup. The solicitor said pay up because if it goes to court you will have no chance and it will cost you a good deal more. And as far as I know this breeder was one of the best and had done nothing wrong.
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 05.08.04 08:00 UTC
I dont know what's going on.. we had some proper formed poops for the first time & now and it's back to the runs with blood!

Another trip to the vets.....
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 05.08.04 08:15 UTC
Don't know how old your pup is, it is very common for pups to have this sort of problem. They move from the breeder to their new home and pick up different type of bugs and drink different water. In your case the pup may have been in not just 2 homes but could be a good few if it was bought in.

So if you hav enot had the pup long it could be change of water, and change of food, it will sort but can take time.
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 05.08.04 10:21 UTC
Hi Charlie was born on April 11th, or so the papers say!

I hope this does clear up, it can't be fun for him.

He is fully vaccinated & wormed (that is due again now), and we have had him since the middle of June.
- By inca [gb] Date 05.08.04 08:21 UTC
I agree with Jackie on this one ...is the vet treating him for colitiis???  good luck with things
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 05.08.04 10:17 UTC
The vet told me is Colitis, and put him on Nature's Best by Hills, which worked in the short term. He didn't prescribe any treatments, but we are going back.

Is Colitis hereditary?
- By tohme Date 05.08.04 10:22 UTC
Colitis is not really a disease or necessarily hereditary per se but a term to cover the condition inflammation of the lower bowel which can manifest itself in a multitude of ways etc; it can be triggered by a number of factors.

- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 05.08.04 10:25 UTC
Thanks, that's a relief to know. The other pups in the litter have it also.

So what is a normal poop for a pup? He just went again and it was the right shape but very soft.
- By inca [gb] Date 05.08.04 11:45 UTC
my pups poop is softer then an adults she is 10 weeks old now (black and tan)  it can be caused by bacteria I believe ! sounds like all the pups have picked something up ..
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 05.08.04 12:29 UTC
Think that colitis just means inflammation of the colon, so no, and it is fairly common in dogs who will insist on eating things they should not and it can occur in dogs if their food is change quickly and not over a number of days. I would put the pup on chicken and rice that I made myself for at least 2 weeks and then slowly change him back onto the food I wanted to use, not sure it would be Hills but that is up to you.
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 05.08.04 17:48 UTC
He has been on chicken and rice and boiled egg and rice for about 4 days now. There has been improvement, but the blood persists.

I am not happy with the price tag of the hills, £12 for a small bag! What do you think would be good?
- By vivian [gb] Date 07.08.04 17:30 UTC
Hi, Please write to the KC and tell them the whole story, mark it F.A.O. Mr. S.A. Croxford (disciplinary) and I will be very surprised if you don't get the response you are looking for. If you like Hill's but not the price go to www.hyperdrug.com and have a look. There is nothing anybody can do to stop you looking at Electoral register it is a document that is on display to the public in any large library. Go for it either under Trades discriptions act which C.A.B. should help you with or sue the pant's of them. Cheers Viv
- By lovelabbies [gb] Date 07.08.04 20:11 UTC
I will thanks for the advice!
