When the owner of a Stud Dog researches the background of a bitch, what exactly are they looking for?

Compatability between their dog and your bitch. Every line of dogs has certains faults ie feet, headshape, toplines, backends and the stud dog owner will usually want to let his dog go to bitches he feels will improve that line as putting two dogs together with splayed feet will only produce puppies with splayed feet. Some people use a system or a xl spreadsheet to work out the percentages to see which dogs are compatible with which bitches.

Reputable stud dog owners will want to see the bitch's certificates of any health checks relevant to the breed, check the date of her birth and confirm with the KC how many litters she may have had and their frequency in order that they do not contravene any of their breed club codes of conduct/ethics as well as seeing if there is anything in the line that they are not happy with.

And they will also request that the bitch owner signs a contract agreeing to their terms and conditions.

If way back in your dogs ancestry there is a problem, be it conformation or health they will want to make dead sure your bitches ancestry does not have the problem too as if she did there is a % chance that some if not all the pups will be affected and not just the bitch owner can be taken to court for compensation so can the stud owner.
