i was going to buy a dalmation puppy the lady who has the pups has the mother kc registered and she has also shown me kc registration papers for the dog she used to stud. im a novice at anything like this and would like anyone to help me the papers for the stud were a photocopy of a hand written document is this ok. the papers the lady has for her dog are printed on a shaded green official document with the five generations included there is a hand written referance number at the top right of this document is this ok.i also asked the lady about the dogs being BAER Tested and she replied that she was not a breeder and therefore wasnt going to have this test done ive been informed that this test was a must for buying a puppy dalmation could someone elaborate further the lady want £400 pounds for the dog is this fair.
when asked about the BAER test the lady also replied that as long as you can clap or make vocal noises to attract the dogs attention then the dog would be fine.

For gods sake steer clear of this person.  The ONLY way to test a dog is if it is BAER hearing tested.  Regarding the pedigree she will only have a copy of the stud dogs pedigree but she should have the pups registration document.  The price is below what you would pay from most reputable breeders unless they have a fault ie a patch blue eye etc.  But if she is not hearing testing them which obviously is not cheap I would seriously doubt whether she will be bothering registering them hence the reason she is cheaper .  Expect to pay between 5 - 600 for a decent puppy. Also how do you know that the parents can hear.  This whole thing totally alarms me.  If you want a pup from a reputable breeder contact the British dalmatian club phone no 01543 490849 or go onto the dalmatian telegraph website which will have the current puppy list.  Even there check that the pups are being properly hearing tested.  Hope all this helps.

She is asking about the average price for a registered puppy, but this lady is in error in many ways! First of all, she is a breeder - her bitch has had a litter, therefore she is a breeder, just as her bitch is a mother! BAER testing is the only sure way to determine if a dog can hear - and it only costs about £15 per puppy, so that's a drop in the ocean in comparison with the rest of the costs. The hand-clapping method doesn't detect unilaterism, and can indeed miss total deafness! Her bitch should have been BAER tested before breeding, as should the stud dog.

I wouldn't worry that she only had a photocopy of the dog's pedigree - she wouldn't have a copy of his registration certificate, but the pedigree should have his registration number on it (to be added to the pedigree she writes for each pup) for reference and verification.

There has been a lot of discussion on a different chat room about the subject of hearing testing and there has been several litters which have not been hearing tested.  One of the litters was advertised next to a dalmatian club advert saying all about the hearing test etc.  When the area rep rang up she was told they had all been sold and the people who bought them did not care about the hearing tested.  This litter was also not registered as the bitches pedigree had been endorsed to prevent her being bred.   As jeangenie has quite rightly pointed out a unilateral (hearing in one ear only) will still be able to hear although if you are a experienced breeder you would be able to notice this prior to testing I suppose as with everything if you are the type of person who cares more about money than the welfare of your breed then this will not stop you selling it as full hearing.
