My Litter of Golden Retrievers are 2 weeks old today and next week are due to wormed for the first time, I have had litters before and have always used Panacur 10% but I must admit having read the past threads on the Board I am in a bit of a quandary.

Any comments gratefully received.
Thanks

Our Cocker Spaniel breeder uses Drontal Plus.

Hi Issysmum, I thought you could only use drontal plus for adult dogs, have I got it mixed up?

Holly's worming certificate says that she was wormed with Drontal Plus at 3.5wks of age then 5 times more. We got Holly when she was 12wks old.

I thought so too Christine, but I've just looked at the leaflet for Drontal Plus & it gives dosages for puppies from 2 weeks of age so presumably it's ok for pups. I give my Cocker litters Drontal Puppy because it's a liquid so easier to get down them (if you don't mind getting covered in pink liquid that is :-) )

Honestly! guess who told me they weren`t for pups? My last vet...

Sweep.I have always used sherleys early wormer syrup you can get it from the pet shop and its a bit horrible as you see the worms when they are expelled but at least you know they are out,and you do it at two and four weeks then you can use a different one if you like later however there is also panacur syrup from the Vets but ive used that and found it no good at all.

I also pay £2.50 per Tablet, I live in West yorkshire, I wonder if you pay more or less depending which area of the country you live.

From the Canine Chemists A pack of 20 drontal plus are £33.29 works out about £1.60 each
They are in north yorks

I have used Panacur for all of my litters (seven), and only had problems (bad) with my third!
My first two litters were wormed in Utero (wormed the pregnant dam)and then at 3 1/2 and 7to 8 weeks, per vets instruction.
With the third litter in 1997 I was sold the wormer in the companies packaging with instructions to worm 2 1/2 to 3 weeks, 5 weeks and 8 weeks. I wormed them first time and they seemed to be a bit quiet and two were a little squitty when Mum cleaned them, but in a day or so all seemed well.
At 5 weeks wormed again, and all hell broke loose! Projectile stools, loss of appetite and weight gain nil for the time they were loose, and only a pound for the week, (would expect 1 1/2 to 2). The pups tended to be a bit loose whenever wormed after that, by new owners, and the one I kept went off her food each month, and became a picky eater!
The same bitch had the same number of pups the next year, this time with much trepidation I did what I did for the first two litters. No problems and no hickup with weight gain! the 3 litters since then have been fine also.
I do take the precaution of dosing them straight after a solid meal, first day after their 2nd feed, second day after their 3rd, and third day after their 4th meal. My theory is that the little immmature stomachs were stripped by the wormer when they had little to digest (as the bitch was done in whelp, and so had her Dam).
I still use Panacur 10% for all the adults!

Think that individual dogs may react to a worming product that is fine with others, I have had 8 dogs on Dontrol plus with no trouble but have 1 who has a severe reaction to Dontrol and he has Panacur granuals. Like us different dogs different reactions my dogs reaction to the Dontrol plus was so bad I never give anything new at weekends when finding a vet may be difficult, as he required an urgent injection to stop the alergic reaction. I would never now give a worming tablet and leave the dogs for at least 24 hours I very nearly learned the hard way. Jackie H

After having problems with one and having heard of problems with the other ( the 2 major brands) I used Strongid dog wormer paste on my last litter. You dose them once, from 2/3 weeks of age, then every two weeks til 12 weeks. They were fine on it, and Westies are not the toughest of breeds at that age. What I liked about it was that it was so very easy to dose accurately, even for such small puppies, and that you only had to dose once, not three consecutive days like some others. They grew on really well, it didn't affect them at all and I shall use it again, definately. Its also very reasonably priced. The vets hadn't heard of it and thought I meant horse wormer, but they did order it for me and yes, there is a "dog one".

My GSP pups are 7 weeks and I have wormed them at 2 weekly intervals since 2 weeks with Drontal Puppy. I previously used Panacur but found this upset their tums. No problem seen with the Drontal. I paid just over £14 for 3 x 50ml at Crufts (3 for 2). I think it was either Canine Chemists or Vet Medic

Thanks for all the advice, not sure what to do for the best, I have got my Panacur10% from Vet Medic already, but I may either order the 2.5% for the first worming or Drontal and then use the 10% for the 5 week & 7 week.

Sweepx

If you get the 2 1/2 you will have to give a bigger dose (4 x as much as with the 10%), same amount of active ingredient, so I wouldn't bother and use the 10%, but make sure they have had a good feed just prior to giving it, so that stomachs well lined!

Blimey I thought £1.00 a tablet was over the
top. It's surprising how prices at the vets up
and down the country are so different.
But we find a vet we trust and like and stick
with them. One thing the internet does is open
your eyes about the cost of lots of things
instead of just accepting the price you are
asked.
