we mated our standard podle bitch to a proven dog and she has not taken
she had two good matings and nothing instead of getting fatter she got thinner
we were thinking of putting her on some sort of antibiotics but i thought i would put it
to you people to see what you think

The most common reason for failed conception is mating at the wrong time.  This is often because the bitch has ovulated unusually early or late, or that she has not synchronised her physical receptiveness with what is going on inside, so is standing before or after whe is fertile.

If this is the first time she has missed I would advise having a series of premate blood tests done next time, bearing in mind that the eggs are ready for fertilization two days after ovulation.  I know some people have rushed to mate the bitch when the tests have said ovulation is imminnet.  My own bitch had imminebt results 3 days running, and finally a result that said she was or had just ovulated on the fourth test.  That was day 12, and she wouldn't stand until day 16 when she was going over, the result a smallish litter of 4 live and one stillborn, born at 59 days from this mating, proving that the premate test was right.

Have both bitch and dog been tested for STD (sexual transmitted diseases)? If not then maybe that should be your first choice before you put her on antibiotics.

If this bitch is a maiden then she may not be producing fertile eggs or she may not be producing eggs at all. She may have a very thick hymen, or it may be one of those things that no amount of testing will find. She could be producing secretions within the womb that is acting as a spermaside (sp) and the sperm are being disabled or killed before they can reach the eggs.

As to the dog, proven of not, if about 8 to 10 weeks ago he was subject to over heating or was unwell he may well be temporally sterile.

Or it could be that these 2 particular dogs are just not suited, again for reasons that cant be ascertained.

sometimes it just means trying again.  A freind recently had a large litter of 10 to the chosen stud even though the bitch missed to him on the previous two seasons!  Everyone told her to try another dog after the second failure.

After all the conception rate is very high in dogs compared to humans where despite monthly cycles it is unusual for a woman to fall pregnant the first motnh of trying.  Doctors ae not even interested in investigating fertility until a couple have been ahving unprotected relations for a year. :D

she is not a maiden bitch she has had 2 litters 1 good 1 when she was on antibiotics and she had 8 then a litter of 2 with this dog we went a bit late because of shows then this time we took her earlier and nothing after that i have herd that he has produce a litter of 11 we would like to repeat it as the dog puppy we kept is so nice

Could be that at the time of the mating the dog or even the bitch was infertile. All sorts of things can effect the fertility of a mammal including the male being overheated at the time the sperm being used at the present time were under construction (about 8 weeks) I would just try again.

A friend of mine has a bitch, 5 years old, had her first litter at the age of 2 no problems.  She has had her mated on 3 seasons since and has never caught, her vet seems to think she isn't fertile even though she is still having seasons.  Sadly she isn't going to try and more as 3 misses really does confirm what the vet has said.  My friend also owns the stud dog, very experienced stud dog at that, he only mates when he knows the time is right with the bitch so it wasn't a case of getting the timing right.

Maybe this is the case with your girl.  As mentioned before there are premate blood tests and smears, trying a different stud dog?? other than that I'm not really sure what to suggest.

Have your friend's bitch's misses always been to the same dog? My bitch missed on 3 successive seasons to the same dog (who was siring litters with other bitches) but had a successful litter to another dog. Sometimes dogs and bitches, although both fertile, are just not compatible.

That is true JG but think the original poster, FAB, has already had a litter from these two and now no luck, so think that she will have to accept the fact that this particular coupling did not work and try again, either with the same stud or a different one.

My friends were with different stud dogs each time, so sadly it does look as though she's infertile :-(

Sometime it just happens. I had a maiden bitch who was mated to 2 different dogs (at different seasons of course) No puppies. 3rd time (last ditch attempt) she was mated to a 13 year old dog & had 6 puppies. The only difference was, I left her with the stud dog owner for a week or so after the mating, so she wasn't upset by the long journey home straight after the mating. No idea if that's what made did the trick or not.

and now we want to try again eather with these homapathic or anything that anyone knows works
