Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Lost interest in Autarky

Hello! I have been feeding Leon (7 month GR) Autarky for a few months now and he has been doing really well on it. Recently though he just doesnt seem bothered with it.  He normally gulps his food down in seconds but for the last couple of weeks he has a sniff at it and walks away. While I dont want to leave food down for him all day it is quite difficult to take the whole lot away from him. He will eventually eat it but it can take a few hours. Should I look at changing his food? I have heard people say they mix Naturediet with Autarky and wondered if this might help. He will eat it straight away if I mix something in (tuna, sardines etc) so I guess he is bored of it? Or could it be the weather? The other thing is, the timing seems to correspond with him having a bit more freedom - we have recently stopped using his crate (although it is still there) and he now has the kitchen and hallway. Not sure if he knows that now he can get to his bowl all day he has decided he would rather snack on it at intervals?

Hot weather will depress appetite, hormones may also be kicking in, you may also be feeding too much; if you don't want to become a slave to his whims and you are happy with the diet, halve the amount, put it down for 15 minutes and if not eaten remove until next meal time; a little hunger tends to focus the appetite; you have a gundog it will not starve to death........................... :D

My pups the same...hes 6 months and used to swallow his food (2 meals) as soon as it was on the floor. However the hot weather means hes not bothered and eats a little once a day...

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad to hear it's not just him! I did wonder if could be feeding him too much but when we took him down from 3 to 2 meals a day I reduced the amount he was getting ever so slightly...suppose it could still be too much but he's a good shape. I agree Tohme, he certainly won't starve to death (greedy little monster)!!! Will try halving meals as suggested and see what happens. Would it be best to do this for a few days then slowly increase the amount back to about normal? I am starting to seriously consider feeding raw now but want to look into it properly before embarking on something I know nothing about.....think he might find mealtimes a bit more interesting then.
