Hi all,
I got a Westie pup Maisy a few weeks ago. Yesterday she collapsed and was unable to walk, and her head was swaying sisde to side. She also had a high temp.
We rang vet who said to give her water and glucose, he said it was probably hyperglecimia sp?
She got no better, so we took her in, and it turns out to be a virus, which is going around.
She had a sky-high temp 104, he gave her a shot to bring that down, and a weeks worth of anti-biotics. So do you think this is right? Anyones elses dog/puppy do this. She had no vomiting or runs.
I hope she is on the mend, she is a little wobbly, but seems much better.
It cost me £50 for her to be seen, (the vet said get here by 7 or it will be £75!), and more for meds on top!

Can't comment of any virus going around unless it is in your area but if you have had her to the vet she will hopefully be oK.
Can I ask how old was she when you got her and has she been vacinated etc? At a young age even if it is frightening the cost never take a chance. They can go down hill so quickly.
Hope she is Ok now.

First, your vet should have asked you to come in immediately. Ridiculous he thinks he can diagnose a problem over the phone, sounds to me more like he was busy taking money off other clients and could not be bothered. Second, your vet telling you that he will charge you more if you come in to see him later in the day is equally ridiculous. Even £50 seems on the expensive side to me for nothing more than an exam and taking your dog's temperature (even high for where I live in Surrey).
I would change vets immediately.
Yes, a virus and high fever can make a puppy very ill. Keep her quiet as possible and make sure you give her the full run of antibiotics. Antibiotics actually help with secondary infections, they are not effective on the virus itself. If she seems much better that's a good sign her body is able to fight the virus.

Hi Stacey,
Changing vet was not an option, they run a service round here in which every vet practice participtes in at weekends. They all take turn at being on call, and £50 is the standard weekend fee.
She is pretty much back to herself today, but yesterday I thought she was going to die.
The vet said it isn't any of the diseases they vaccinate for.

Maybe worth investigating other vets for a future emergency.
Unless you are quite rural you tend to find a couple of vets.
I recent changed mine after years and years of happy business but for the same reason I want to be able to get to a vet 24-7 without out ridiculous and exagerated costs.
My new vet is actually open 7 days 8am -7pm which is fantastic.
I do always find it hard to see how with such a quick look they can tell how things are not vaccine related etc or something related. No saying they don't because some obviously can tell things easily.
When did she get her first vaccine and what age? Have you had a word with the breeder to see if any of the litter mates are Ok? Just a thought.

Hi
what happened with this pup? Did she fully recover? Im interested in reactions to vaccinations, and wondered if she made a full recovery?

she was fine! After 24 hours she picked right up. The fever caused her to behave like that.
Thats good. :) Im glad she is ok
