hello iwanted to know if anyone knows is it safe to feed one year akita sheep or lamb meat raw or cooked, and also give him the bones to chew on from the same meat.
thanks Naz
I have fed mine raw lamb & mutton for several years. They do very well on it. I also add vegetables and occasional egg, tuna, sardines, cheese, yoghurt, cooked pasta/rice. I would not feed the bones which splinter, e.g. leg bones. I know some will give the whole/half breast complete with rib bones. I am a bit wary of that as mine are "gulpers' & I have had an incident of choking.

Mine eat raw lamb shanks, ribs, chops etc regularly

hi tohme can we use meat as whole meal,e.g feeding twice a day,the reason i ask that because i can get sheep and lamb meat for free at the moment.my brother works for a meat firm and he can bring home fresh meat everyday as a employee.
thanks

You can feed what you like however you need to be aware of a couple of things.
Feeding meat only without bone will result in severe calcium deficiency; if you are not feeding bones then you must find an alternative source of calcium.
Feeding from only one protein source MAY eventually trigger an intolerance in your dog.

Any one know if theres a difference between beef and lamb tripe apart from the animal they come from
Archer
I think that the lamb tripe smells much worse than the beef tripe, it is also more slimey ! I have also been told that your dogs are more likey to get tape worms from lamb trip, but not sure if that is really true.

Vegetables are IMHO a nice to have rather than essential. If you are feeding meat and bones the calcium:phosphorus ration will be correct. obviously do not forget liver, kidneys, heart etc.
The problem with only using ONE source of protein is that it is possible for a dog to develop a sensitivity to it hence why most people recommend variety so that the immune system does not trigger a response to particular proteins. I would recommend if you can to feed chicken and beef as well.
Lamb is generally quite fatty so keep an eye on weight. Raw eggs should not be overlooked or tinned/fresh oily fish etc.
