I have a 10 month old scottish terrier bitch. I would like to get a doggy companion for her and wondered if there are any guidlines regarding the suitable age to introduce another dog, the right gender etc. I am thinking of getting a cesky terrier.

I like to have about 3 to 4 years between mine, and would say that 2 should be the minimum, as to what sex depends on if by the time you are ready to get another pup your bitch has been spayed, if so then a dog, if not a bitch.

I would suggest you leave getting another dog, until your girl is around 2yrs old, and you have her trained, without the distractions of a new pup ;)

Many people will tell you you woud be better getting a male dog, rather than another bitch, as they can fight. However many people (myself included) have two bitches, without any problems.

I'm sure there will be more people along later with advice and suggestions.

I've got 4 bitches ages 5, 3, 14 months and nearly 12 months and have never had any trouble with them, they get along just great! No problems with house training either ;-)

Don't think having several dogs causes problems with house training, the opposite really as the adult dogs show the pups what is expected.

Have to admit with my last two, I have not had to bother about house training much as they have taken the lead from the older ones! I do, however make sure they knew the commands for "going" by simply using them when they pooed or peed (outside of course!)

Yay, Scottie alert!

Hi scottie, I can't answer your question, but I have a 9 month old scottie bitch so I had to say hello! :-)

Good to hear that someone else out there was brave enough to take on one of these mischievous little things! Great fun, but not sure I could handle two!
