Topic Dog Boards / General / Pup cant pass a Bone !!!
- By lel [gb] Date 31.07.04 11:40 UTC
Anyone have any advice on helping pup pass through a small bone ? She yelped when first trying but now it seems to be protruding but wont pass through !
I have phoned the vet who says feed brown bread as it will wrap around it but she wont eat it and I am worried!!!
Will it damage her ? What do i do ?

Think you need the vet to see the pup, don't take no for an answer, bread of any colour will take at least 12 hours from mouth to anus if not more, during which time the dogs delicate intestinal membranes can be damaged.

Get dome liquid parafin sown her, or if it is protfuding enough use some gloves and put some KY jelly up her bum and ease it out.

Brown bread will wrap around it??  What does he think it is - a sandwich?  I do think that something with a bit of bulk would help and brown bread would provide bulk. I would have thought that if its got that far then wrapping it isn't an option      Sounds like its caused a little pain and pups 'clamped up'  (after all it seems to have got through the intestines with no probs ;) )  Have you tried putting something oily and tasty on the brown bread? sardines in oil or similar?  if that isn't taken I think if it were me I would probably try something like Catlac (for fur balls in cats - basically vaseline and marmite type stuff) to help things get lubricated and move along.

You may prefer to run these suggestions past a vet first ;)   Hope its sorted soon and pups back to normal.

Hope this helps

Thanks to those of you who replied and offered advice. :) Very grateful
Vet kept trying to persuade me to wait until emergency clinic at 5 but there was no way I would leave her in discomfort til then.
I phoned them back to explain I was worried and she was taken in straight away. Vet removed the bone under anaesthetic . It was about 1 inch long but was trying to come out horizontally and not vertically - hence the discomfort . Shes home now and ok touch wood :)

Just worries me that people who arent as assertive would take the vets advice and leave a pup for a few hours when it could all be sorted earlier :(
