Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Advice on 4month old male pup
- By charmedagain [fr] Date 29.07.04 20:22 UTC
Hi everyone i am just wanting a little advice.
I have a friend who has one of my male pups ( german shepherd) he also has a bitch who is now in heat what are the chances that he will sire a litter if he gets to her when she is ready to accept the male.
He is only 4months old and his testicles have not dropped down yet, I have been told that 6months is the youngest he will be before he can father pups i also been told at 4months old he is fertile enough to do it please any help would be great.

I think 4 months is a bit young to be fertile. But I suppose anything is possible. Why doesn't your friend just separate them so there's nothing to worry about? He's not wanting them to breed is he? Because at 4 months the male is way too immature and isn't old enough yet to have any health tests done.

My friend keeps the dogs seperated but its a little hard with having 2 small children who keep letting them back.
HE is calling the vet this morning to get some more advice on if he is old enough to sire puppies.
I would have agreed with you saying 4months is too young but the different views i am getting mostly saying its a good chance he will since he is nearly 5months old.
Thanks for your reply and will keep you posted

Thing is didn't they consider this problem when they got the male?  I only keep bitches for just that reason as in a busy family home I could not keep the sexes adequately seperated as my living accomodation on ground floor all runs one into the other.  She will have smae problem next time the bitch comes in season.  It is unlikley but possible for the pup to sire a litter, so they need to be kept apart.  At 8 or 10 months when she is in season again the same problem witll occur.

The best thing for her wo8ld be for her to board one of them until the season is over.

i can t see the what help a vet would be as in human males they all develop diffrentley, when my dog was 5 months old he tird his hardest to get to me in season bitch, and im sure that is he had got to her he could of shired a litter

Just An update he has been to the vets and his testicles have not dropped yet but the vet seems to think he is capable of producing a litter if able to get to her. I cant understand how he worked that out as if they have not dropped he would not be able to produce sperm guess i am the one tahts wrong....

I have offered to have the pup here till she is well out of heat but my friend would rather have him at home so he dont get used to being around me or getting stressed out.
The pup is now 18weeks old so i assumed that he was not old enough to produce well as they say some animals mature faster than others.
