Topic Dog Boards / Showing / walking straight - any tips?
- By sarahl [fr] Date 28.07.04 12:13 UTC
My beagle bitch has got into a habit of not walking straight when she walks back to the judge.   She will and can walk in a straight line but when she goes up and down to the judge she tends to turn in to one side, either towards me, or towards the other dogs and then comes to a stand too far away from the judge.     I never have a treat in my hand when walking her but she knows she'll get one when she goes back to the line up.   Any advice for the best way to get out of this habit?

My Irish Setter pup is the same (well worse cos he never walks/trots straight  ) so I will be interested to hear what others have to say about this :)

Thank god for that I was begining to think it was just dallies that did it.  My youngest girl and her half brother find it impossible to move in a straight line so we blame the stud dog!!!!!!!  I have been advised by my friend who runs a ringcraft class that if you look directly at the judge instead of the dog it works.

I was just going to suggest that.  Focus on something as you turn, the judge is good as you want to go towards her/him.  Don't look at the dog, if you go straight, they will too.

As others have said, stand straight and run straight!!!  the other thing you could do in training is running infrount of your dog to teach it to run straight as they will follow you!
