I have a Westie who goes mad when I take him for a walk near my home. He pulls on the lead and barks at everyone in sight. He even barks at dustbins and plastic bags! Is this normal? He is 8 months old and was castrated about 2 weeks ago. Will he grow out of this behaviour? I try to calm him down by pulling him back and telling him off but this doesn't seem to help. Maybe it's a territorial thing because he doesnt seem half as bad when I take him for a walk where I work? Any advice would be appreciated.
Without seeing his reaction to things you mention it is hard to say what the root cause is.
My last rehomed dog was very much like yours sounds but it was because he was undersocialised. He too was an awful puller so in his previous homes he wasn't really walked much. As a result he had not had much experience of the 'outside world'.
He barked and howled at plastic bags, discarded paint cans and even his own shadow. He had never met a cow, sheep, horse etc and was afraid of trucks and anything with airbrakes. He was unsure about what they were so I used to say (excitedly) 'let's go see' and encourage him to approach anything he reacted to and he soon stopped doing it.
The pulling took a little longer - it was all down to training I'm afraid.
