I thought I would post this topic to see what everyones views are..... a friend rang me yesterday to ask if she could come and visist me today with her 15mth Cavalier !!! I said not to yet as India ) only 9 wks ) has not yet had her second vaccination after a pause she replied ok i understand but if I was to buy another puppy the pup would mix with my dog as most breeders only get the first jab done ? it got me thinking that she is right !!!!! what are your views as it got me thinking ???

Logically yes she is right but then it all depends on whether you want your dog to mix before he has had his injections. I let mine mix with a dog who I genuinly knew had his injections but only for a little play, bearing in mind that he was only a little pup and this was a big red setter! It does help with the socialisation. I just didn't take him out to anywhere where I knew there may be somethng that he could get i.e parks etc.
Basically it is up to you but there seems no harm if you are certain that the cav has had all injections. Mixing with other dogs from an early age will certainly help.

My puppies & adults mix from the day they arrive, never had any problems & it is good to socialize puppies with"safe"outside dogs too
Mine go to Dog club & watch from a knee or crate from the same time They are not walked outside of course until they are older & I have done the basic training at home

Agree let them mix with as many 'safe' dogs as you can. Think you have to take a chance with a pup and decide which is the most important, to socialise or protect and with care I would go with the first. This only applies to healthy robust pups.

thanks for that..it's not the socialising bit as she has 3 other dogs here and our house is full of kids this summer i was just worried about her picking something up but i think my friend has a valid point

She does need to"socialize"with outside dogs especially of other breeds before going out & possibly meeting some not so pleasant ones 7 having a bad first experience
I think my boys are so outgoing because they saw lots of other dogs when very young

Hi Inca
Im always paranoid about mine and admit they are spoilt to bits
We asked the vet about taking Gus out as I was worried about Libs picking anything up from him after a walk - he suggested walking him on the beach as it constantly cleaned with the tide
In answer to your question anyway - yes I was the same with pup and I wouldnt let anyone visit her before all her vaccs ;) but as I say I am a little paranoid & they are spoilt :)
I was advised by my vet when ellie and meg were small that it is perfectly fine for them to mix with other dogs that have had injections, after their first injections. As most dogs are vaccinated these days the chances of contracting disease is minimal, unless you live in an area where there has been an outbreak. My dog mixed with all manner of dogs at the dog training club i go to, at 8 weeks onwards and is fine. I think that socialisation with dogs outside of the family is very important from a young age.
Although i definately wouldn't advise this, my 'friend' took her pup out for walks in very busy areas before any vaccinations (from 8 weeks onwards!) and although i don't like to admit it he was perfectly fine, (although he is no longer with my friend, thats another story). I think that there is a certain amount of over cautiousness regarding dogs and vaccinations, as i thought that pups should have immunity from either the mother or a certain amount from the vaccine. As your friend has said, your dogs must still go for walks and so they have just as much chance of bringing anything back as your friends dog.

If your worried have her wash her dogs feet before the dog comes into play :) They would sure play eachother out and enjoy a good romp...I would let them :)
My sister brought her westie round the same day we brought Millie home (even though she knew I wasn't too keen, she was adamant she was bringing him round to meet his new friend!), and as Millie hadn't had either of her injections I let her mix regularly with Max as I know he is fully vaccinated - whereas I wouldn't let her go to father-in-law's house as OH couldn't remember his family dog ever having a vaccination in his life so it was a no-go area for Millie!
I didn't take her out for walks though, even in my arms until she was fully vaccinated which was probably a little over-protective but there were confirmed diagnosis' of parvo in the area and warnings in our local papers, vets etc so I wasn't taken any chances, especially as our street was covered in dog poo at that time (until I got onto the warden about it and stickers went up and patrols began ;-) )
