Phew, its been a heck of a day! Came down stairs this morning to find my girl with large double bubble protruding from her vulva, and after 1/2hour, no puppy or straining. Rushed her to vets, who broke water bag and gave her an injection. He then put her in a cage and said shed have a 95% chance of needing a csection! He complained that he would have to cancel his morning surgery, asked to sign a consent form, and ring him later :( . I was distraught, no explainations etc and burst into tears. I then refused to sign the consent and retrieved my girl from the cage, and took her out to the car. No way was she staying there, crying and alone!! When we got home our first baby was immediately born with no problems, followed by three more. We had a three hour gap while she slept and then she produced another :) . This was an hour ago, and though she seems quite content, she is still lightly panting, not straining or anything-how long should I leave her? Could there be more pups? Ive kept in contact with the vet   even though he was so rude and insensitive, but want to avoid unnecessary intervention.

Hi...

How is it going......what breed is your bitch...?

I do not post on here a lot just kinda lurk and listen....LOL :)
- By russett1 [gb] Date 27.07.04 16:28 UTC
if she is panting and straining then there is another puppy on the way. intervals between puppies (with no panting or straining) can vary and be as long as several hours. keep us posted on her progress! :-)

ps what breed is she?
- By Carla Date 27.07.04 16:30 UTC
I'd guess Dogue de Bordeux :)
- By russett1 [gb] Date 27.07.04 17:18 UTC

Wrong guess, Staffies, (they are all spoken for by the way  so no enquiries please) dont want to get in trouble from admin :)
Its been nearly 4 hours since last whelp, and shes sleeping and letting them feed etc, so i am assuming thats it? The only thing Ive noticed is that she doesnt seem happy and at one with the world, as it says in the books, in fact she seems a bit p'd off and grumpy. Perhaps its the shock of it all and shes just tired, vets said not to worry unless she's straining. So thats it! :)
Kerrie xx
I do have Dogue de Bordeaux too !!

congratulations Kerrieddbx,
hope mom + puppies are all doing well!
sounds like shes had a bit of a rough time!, so dosn't surprise me that shes p'd off.
just go with the flow, and keep a close eye on her.
kind regards
mark

Thanks Anne-Marie :)
Four boys and two girls, the boys are like dad and girls just like mum! We are going to keep one from the litter, Darren wants to keep two, but there are more owners than puppies, so someone will be disappointed :( .
As for the Bordeaux, I'm sure it will be years before I even think about breeding those-goodness I'd be a complete wreck!! Angels a great Mum, but Im paraniod about her squashing them, or forgetting to clean them etc. Ive just got to stand back and let her get on with it now. Weighed them this morning and they're all gaining, so she's doing a good job.
Bye all, thanks for your posts
Very busy and tired 'grandma'

One way I was told to tell if all have been born was to stand bitch and put hands on both sides, then touch your fingers together, you should be able to feel your fingers if not then more pups. You will fill a lump as time goes on lets say half hour and if that lump has gone down then thats her uterus contracting :) This method has worked well for me and as well for someone else who I helped whelp their bitch.

Hope mom and pups are doing fine :)

We took Angel to the vets for a check up and he had a good feel around, he is pretty sure theres nothing left in there! She was given an anti biotic shot too-this is normal procedure i assume? Anyway, all is well and she seems very happy now :)
Cheers
Kerrie

- By kerrieddbx [gb] Date 29.07.04 11:59 UTC
Six, four boys two girls, the biggest was first 13oz!! No wonder she struggled :D

Ohh Kerrie,

I glad to hear everything is good with your puppies and their mum.......

I have a staffie as well...they are a fantastic breed.....would love a pup but unfortunatley Sky my staffie does not like other dogs...so at the moment it is a no no......
