Topic Dog Boards / General / FREE POOP SCOOP BAGS!!
- By dobermannblitch [gb] Date 26.07.04 14:42 UTC
I heard it from someone that the council are offering free poop scoop bags.  So i went into my branch office and asked for some and sure enough they do.  It may be different for different councils but you can always try your luck.

Our Council gives them free too :D  We can pick them up from Enironmental Services offices or from Libraries.  Mind you, they used to be lovely thick bags, but over the years they've got thinner and thinner

I just use the pound shop nappy sacks, 300 for £1 isn't a huge price to pay!  :-)

Lots of councils do this - although I don't think Edinburgh do.  The Dog Aid Society provide them on free rolls down at the Silverknowes walkway.  The one thing that irritates me where I live (the estate) is that there isn't a single bin to put the bags when full.  The council says its because kids set fire to the bins, but how can they encourage people to pick up the poop if there's nowhere to dispose of it.  I take it home and stick it in my own wheelie bin (or the guy round the corner's bin who is particularly horrid to me if copper barks at his dog :D).

our council do but you have to give your details to prove your in the borough, they are big and quite thick so ok for nothing and do the job.we pay enough council tax so why not get some thing free.
- By ange [gb] Date 27.07.04 14:45 UTC
We get them free too but I dont know if they are environmentally friendly as they are plastic. They are brilliant if you are out but I tend to pickup with newspaper in the garden.

Dundee  Council dog warden service and the refuse offices as well as some vets give out good green vest type bags for free and they are thick as well.    It's just a shame some folk in certain parts of Dundee don't take advantage of this!  :(     I live in Perth & Kinross so I have to get friends living in Dundee City to get me them whenever they can!

Hi Christine,

The latest ones are ever so thin though by comparison to the old shiny plastic ones - I found some old ones at the back of the cupboard under the sink and the difference was huge!  Allegedly, and I stress the allegedly very much indeed, some bright spark wanted the poo bags to have holes in them because of the risk of children suffocating themselves with them   Fortunately sense prevailed - can you imagine, poo bags with holes in :D

Lesley,

It wasn't until I was scrolling back through this I saw your reply and thought ooppps shouldn't have opened my big mouth!!  ;)   Yes the old ones were thicker but more awkward to tie with no handles!   The ones my local PO give me are thinner and come in a roll of 20.  20!  To clean up after 4 dogs!
- By LF [gb] Date 27.07.04 20:40 UTC
That's very true Christine, the thin ones' handles are easier to tie up!  And easier for the idiots who do clean up after their dogs and then leave the bags dangling from a tree or a fence ;)

When I go to the library and ask for poo bags they usually hand over one packet = approximately 16 bags!!  So I just keep saying "more please" until they hand over enough!  Even with one wee dog 20 wouldn't last very long

my dog always poops right infront of the same bin in the park all the time :PI must have trained her well :D  i just get a wad of tissue and put it in .easy job done lol
- By marie [in] Date 28.07.04 07:13 UTC
ours come in packs of 50 and you can get as many as you likes at 1 time.just pop in to the local council office and they have always got some.but it doesn't stop some owners from thinking that they don't have to clean up.

I save all my used bread bags and when I buy veg I only tie a loose knot in the bag so I can use those too. It's free and I'm doing my recycling bit too. I agree, there aren't enough bins around....who wants to walk about with a bag of poo swinging around? (s'pose it shows everyone you're a responsible owner ;))

My local '99p Store' sells the black bin liner style poo bags at 99p for 150 and I love these, as they have the tie handles and are black whereas my sister uses sandwich bags to display her dogs deposits as she walks down the street.  I don't think i would bother asking my council for a roll of 16-20 when I can get 150 for 99p - I buy several boxes at a time in case they run out.  I haven't had to go back for months!

I expect my council would give them out as we get our bin liners for free, but if they only give you a handful, is it not just easier to buy a big box for about £1?
- By jessthepest [gb] Date 28.07.04 17:03 UTC
Maybe I should buy a trolley load and flog them on Ebay :-D
- By heidleberg [gb] Date 28.07.04 17:08 UTC
I use nappy sacks but also our vet has poo bags free, everytime i go in there i pick some up on my way out :)
- By alic [gb] Date 29.07.04 21:15 UTC
I buy the nappy sacks too...they're kind of scented although nowhere near strong enough to mask the contents! I doubt our council give bags away though, we don't even have proper poo bins (there are stickers on the bins in the park though saying suitable for doggy waste). My parents live on the Isle of Wight and there and doggy doo bins everywhere.

As for people not picking up, it makes me mad, not least to say that since Millie has been in season she has developed rather a taste for other dog's business....ARGHHH!

not sure if our local council do or not, Teignbridge in Devon.  There are plenty of dog bins around but always seem to be put in the wrong place if you know what i mean.  They also have the empty holders on the side for poo bags but there are never any there.  Tried using nappy bags but couldnt stand the smell of them!  So now just buy proper poo bags.  Its a small price to pay to do your bit for the environment.
- By SharonM Date 11.09.04 17:36 UTC
You just can't win, I've just heard that our council are stopping doing the 'environmentally friendly' poop bags as it has been found that the chemcials in the bags which helps to asborb/break down the bags actually breaksdown into our soil then into our streams as dangerous chemicals.........therefore NOT ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY!
- By Sullysmum Date 11.09.04 23:43 UTC
Went to Southend local council they dont know anything about free poo bags so say they dont do them,so  back to using the nice smelling wilkinsons nappy bags.
