Topic Dog Boards / General / Willis is driving me mad!!
- By Carla Date 26.07.04 08:37 UTC
Following Phoebe's spaying on Friday Willis has turned into a total s*x pest only stopping short of ripping his fur off and flashing at Phoebe. He is a total nightmare. He is crying, whining, humping (not pleasant with a dane), whinging..the lot. He will not leave her alone and settle and spent the night howling to go and let her out of her room. He is going through all his training in a vain attempt to be allowed to get to her and will sit, lie, give paw, do anything in return for 5 minutes with the poor girl.

She has currently locked herself in my room (I'm sure I heard her pushing furniture against the door) whilst he whines "I will always love you" Whitney-style outside the door.

Whats going on!!

I don't know what it is with boys, but Harry and Piglet are the same when either of the girls has been to the vet - even routine boosters. They're both spayed, and have been for years, but there must be something about the vet's surgery that is a turn-on for the boys. They do get bored after a few days ...

Sorry that's not much help, but at least you know you have my sympathy!
:)

I can't be any help what-so-ever - but sounds awful :( Poor Willis - he's obviously in mourning :D

Every day he's like this he's one day closer to a short sharp visit to the vet himself

Poor Willis :( :(

Well funnily enough candy is being the same with buddy.she dragged him onto the garden this morning, ripped his collar off and licked his stitches whilst he squealed for mercy.she has also been mounting him as well!!i know she is due her first season anytime but she is going bonkers!!Girl power or what?:)
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 26.07.04 10:32 UTC
Would think it the smell of blood, don't let him mount as it could cause damage. And coming from the other angle don't allow the licking of stiches either could cause infection.
- By Carla Date 26.07.04 10:55 UTC
There's no blood anywhere though - she's got a one inch cut thats healing nicely. She's seeing him off if he comes near her but its not stopping him. They are separated at the moment, but I'm still not impressed because he just peed in the front room!
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 26.07.04 10:59 UTC
There would have been quite a lot, but because it has been cleaned up you can't see it but the dog can still smell it. She has also been in the operating theatre which I am sure is well cleaned after each session by not between each op when a disinfectant wipe is probable all the table gets between each spay, to another dog she smells interesting.
- By Carla Date 26.07.04 11:04 UTC
Hmm - thats a good point. Perhaps I should give her a wash down?
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 26.07.04 11:07 UTC
Don't wet anywhere near the site of the op. best if you can to keep the dog away from her for as long as possible, even when the scare has healed she will still have areas internally that are not ready for any rough treatment.
- By Carla Date 26.07.04 11:12 UTC
Yes, I will. I'll keep them apart. I think he's confused as to what she is now - he acted the same way when he met a neutered male.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 26.07.04 11:23 UTC
It is a well known condition that castrated males get as a side effect of the operation, called feminisation syndrome, most the time it is mild and unless you keep intact dogs causes little more than irritation on walks but sometimes lifelong medication is required.
- By Carla Date 26.07.04 11:28 UTC
Willis was a total nightmare when he met that neutered male. Even though Willis was a pup at the time and the dog was fully grown, Willis gave it his best shot - several times! He just would not leave him alone. I thought it was because he was confused because he couldn't work out what they dog actually was...gender wise...is it something more intricate that that? Does a neutered male emit certain signals?
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 26.07.04 11:40 UTC
There are several glands in the male body producing hormones and the main ones are adrenal, pituitary, thyroid & parathyroid and the testicles so you can see that the removal of the testicles is removing a large amount of the hormone producing ability of the male dog. Do not know what happens but it seems to cause some of the other hormone glands to change the amount and type of hormone/steroid that they produce, sometimes causing the dogs to produce substances that make it either smell like a bitch or worse a bitch in season.

Bitches do not seem to be so effected as do the dogs by the removal of their ovaries, but most have some coat change and a fair number become rather more pushy, but none seem to suffer as much as some of the more unfortunate males do although severe problems are comparatively rare.

I had the same problem with my Dally, we stuck with it for four years, but in the end I could stand no more and he wasn't happy pacing about and generally restless indoors and a right pain in the bum when out.

I have to say I have never regretted having him neutured, he turned into a different dog overnight and seemed much happier himself.

I do sympathise, it drives you to the point of not even liking him in the end.

I could try intraveneously with a stretch of hosepipe?
- By Daisy [gb] Date 26.07.04 13:41 UTC
Perhaps being a Dane he'd prefer Carlsberg :d

Unfortunately, he's getting worse. Last night I resorted to ringing the vets in order to get advice on giving him half an ACP tablet (I had some left over from a prescription for the horses thankfully) to try to calm him down (which they agreed). It lasted all of 20 minutes. He is driving us all mad this morning, including poor Phoebe. He is going to be booked in to the vets ASAP to be castrated - cannot cope with all this :(
- By candie [gb] Date 27.07.04 09:10 UTC
aaah chloe, its for the best and he'll be fine afterwards!!Buds sends his regards, he is back to his normal self already and doesnt miss his nuts at all!!lol!!:)
- By Lois_vp [gb] Date 27.07.04 09:14 UTC
You have my sympathy, Chloe - this kind of behaviour does your head in, doesn't it ?
I have 2 intact males and their absolute favourite pastime is humping each other. It drives me mad !
People have told me they would probably still do it even if they had the op - something about learned behaviour, I think.......
- By Carla Date 27.07.04 09:20 UTC
True, I understand he may well continue after the op - but it will slow him down for a day or so at least. I am hoping the vet will give him something to calm him down aswell. I am not a fan of castration, but he's 2 now, fully grown and I cannot be coping with this behaviour at all - not with children about. Its driving me round the bend!
- By Lorelei [gb] Date 27.07.04 19:52 UTC
Hope youre now at the " feeling no pain whatsoever" hic stage now Chloe :) We did laugh at the pictures you conjure up for us especially the Guinea Pig and Dane ( sic - you bet!). Serously I hope peace is restored soon.
- By Carla Date 27.07.04 20:08 UTC
Oh, you have no idea - its gotten worse.

Willis saw the vet today. He was given valium. He has had TEN (on the vets instructions) since 3pm this afternoon and they have had no effect whatsoever - oh, he went wobby for about ten minutes after the last 4 he had. I cannot believe it. He's a junkee. A s*xually frustrated junkee with a high tolerence for tranqs. You couldn't make it up.
- By kazz Date 27.07.04 22:12 UTC
All you need now then Chloe is for him to gain an appreciation for "loud bass ear splitting music" and you have a "delinquent" ;)

Hope things get better soon.

Hi,

I have 2 entire males and bitches, however Pheobe couldn't possibly have a low grade infection could she???Even if she doesn't have any discharge if she has a slight infection Willis may be smelling this, causing him to really want her.
Just a thought.

Regards Briony:-)

Phoebe has been checked out at the vets - that was what I thought was causing it. The vet checked her out and he feels she is fine - no temperature or discharge. He thinks they may have manipulated her ovaries during surgery to cause her to release hormones which is whats setting him off. He's doped up on valium now so he's slightly more manageable :)

Just to make you feel better, I've just read in my paper about an Akita who took double the dose of darts that a lion would need to sedate him for the vet!  They had to get a veterinary marksman in from the local safari park...do you live near a safari park??!!
- By dvnbiker [gb] Date 30.07.04 21:27 UTC
Wel I have to say reading these posts has certainly made me laugh conjuring up the visions of him more than anything.  We have just been through similar with our young BC, very sexually active but with every male dog or young man he met.  It got to the stage that everytime he went to say hello to a bloke he would cock his leg against them.  Very embaressing and not every bloke really enjoys it!  He had to be castrated anyway as he had an undescended testicle so that was removed and while they were they removed the other one.  He is currently curled up fast asleep which is a first as he is normally humping the older dog.  Roll on 6 weeks when we should see some change!
