Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Trouble getting hold of Bone :(
- By Gonzo [gb] Date 23.07.04 02:55 UTC
Hi all,

I have been to all my local butchers, and when I ask them for a marrow bone, or any bones they may have, suitable for dogs, they just look at me blankley. I have tried, Dewhursts, my local market butchers, Tesco's and Sainsbury's, to no avail.

I live in the South Manchester / Cheshire area, anyone who knows of any butchers where I can get these, please PM me, or reply here.

Kindest Regards

Ben

You may well find that most butchers are now abiding by new EU legislation which prohibits them from giving people bones for anything other than 'human consumption' - you might like to ask for bones for stock instead............

I usually get mine for free at a farm shop but the other day I asked in Morrisons. They got me some and labelled them as "Bones...ideal for stock" (and charged me for them :( )

As I understand it the law says that butchers can supply bones and trimmings for pets as long as it's "fit for human consumption"

We get marrow bones from the smaller family type butchers or those in the market if you have one near you

They will charge though - not like the old days when you got them for free ;)

I've just had a right result.Went to the local meat market and while buying some wings etc to get me through till my next delivery I saw a box of 'stock' chicken carcasses. The gentleman gladly gave me the whole box for free and I've put in a repeat order for every friday!!

Im in Bury, near manchester (if that helps you a bit) and can get most things, you need to seek out a small family type butcher, so get driving round little villages n stuff.

The days are gone where all butchers actually butchered their own meat, frequently a lot of 'butchers' are just 'meat sellers'.... since they dont HAVE whole carcasses to butcher, they dont have the waste bones either. I find the specialist butchers who make th eir own sausages, beef burgers etc and do 'posh' stuff will tend to have bones going spare, whereas the meat markets will only have chicken wings and carcasses, and only then if enough people ask.

I noticed the other day, after asking months ago if my meat market bloke could get carcasses, and him saying no, that he now has chicken carcasses a plenty! Either Bury suddenly has a HUGE amount of people eating chicken soup, or raw feedings got a bit more popular!

Im in Altrincham.

There is a market butchers in town, I went there and asked for some, but they just looked at me like I was mad, lol :)

I'll have to try smaller villages like Timperley and the likes for butchers :(

Yep, smaller villages, posh butchers......... i was amazed that the 'famous Bury market ' (famous for tat that drops in bits?) couldnt do a simple marrow bone!

Hi Gonzo try the indoor market at Wythenshawe Civic Centre one of the buthcers there sells the bones and they're not expensive.  A butcher across the way sells chicken at a very reasonable rate and the dogs love them :d

Thanks Perrodeagua :D

Ill go there on Monday then :)

You're welcome :d

If you go in facing where the market is and the newsagent stall is on your right it's the butchers straight facing on the right, they usually have bones, pet mince near the far end on the top of the counter.  The butchers on the first left sell the nice chicken, if you feed your dogs chicken, that is.

Yeah, he's on dry food still mixed with tinned meat, but twice a week he gets something like Chicked, braising steak and the likes with his dry food. Im sure it doesnt touch the sides, lol :D

Thankyou again :D
