Topic Dog Boards / General / New male pup only has one ball!!
- By danny [gb] Date 23.07.04 13:36 UTC
I was looking to obtain a new rott pup from the same excellent breeder as my present rott, I collected him 4 weeks ago , he is now 5 months old, and as far as me or my vet can see he only has one testicle coming down we cant feel the other one anywhere. the breeder admits she had not checked his bits and that she will have him back. we are attched to him now, so that is out of the question. i wanted to show him but i guess that is not allowed now. should i have him neutered  and have his missing ball searched for and removed to prevent cancer? any advice is gratefully recieved,  thanks  dan x

Hi
Once bred a litter and kept the pick male, at 4 1/2 months he had only one, and so we decided to pet home him.
The new owner rang me up when he was about 11 months as his other testicle had dropped and she was going to neuter him.

Have to say i think this was unusual to drop so late, but i would wait a little longer to see if the second one drops before you have both removed.

I had the same problem with our youngest boy, but our vet advised us to wait until he was a year old to see if it made an appearance.  It didn't, so we had him neutered, and the vet had to go right up into his abdomen to find it!  Speak to your vet, if it's going to drop it will generally do so before 1 year, so give him a bit more time yet! :)

there's a standard  poodle bitch just been made up, who's brother was kept at home as he only had one !!!!  however its just dropped, they must be well over a year old now.

Did not own, but knew a GSD that did not drop till he was 19 months, he only just missed having them both removed when a pup because he had a bout of kennel cough and after the owner had difficulty in booking him in again.

A lot will depend on wher in the abdomen the missing teste is.  My friend had a dog to show and he had only oje, and she wanted to know if it would come down before he got too settled with her.

If it is above the Inguinal ring then it will not be able to come down, as it will be too large to pass sown this late, but if it is below this it still has a chance.

She went to a vet who was an expert with Ultrasound, prinmarily using it as a diagnostic tool with Cancer etc.  He was able to find the testicle and confirm that it was in fact above the Inguinal ring, and the pup was able to be rehomed in a pet home at 5 months.  He is now about 18 months or two years and still unilateral, and will be castrated.

That is true if the owner is prepared to seek out an expert, if not, and the dog is not required for showing, I would wait till it is 18 months old and then if the count is still one have the retained one removed.

The poster did want to show, but looks like they will keep the pup regardless, so it all depends on how much they need to know if it will come right or not :D

thanks for your help everyone, we certainly will never rehome him because of this, we love him too much, it was really a future health concern. i have heard of retained testicles becoming cancerous. the one he has showing is huge, maybe he got 2 in 1 ha! ha!  thanks again, i guess i will have to be patient.   danny xx

Was a time when I believed that a vet could feel if it had passed through the pelvis but now I am not sure that they can and so unless it has actually appeared, even brifely, in the scrotum there seems no way of knowing except as you say by scanning. If he were mine I would wait till he was 18 months and then ask the vet to remove the retained one.
