I was just wondering how many people fully understand the code with regards to their dogs, I know it has just recently changed but do people 'get' it?
Hi Emily Rose,
Yes I 'get' it, but then I have to - I'm an environmental studies student!
Basically you should keep your dog 'under close control' at all times. This can include off lead, but in certain areas and at certain times different rules apply.
You have a right to walk on access land, with your dog under close control, except between 1st March to 31st July and at any other time near livestock. During these times and situations you can still walk the route but your dog must be on a lead of less than 2m in length.
Grousemoor owners have a right to ban you from their land totally for a period of 5 years and any farmer who has 15 hectares or more can ban you for 6 weeks during lambing time.
However, during these situations the landowners must take all reasonable action to inform you - i.e they must put up signs, to inform you to keep your dog out of the fields.
I hope this has been of some help and made it a bit clearer, if not ask me again and I'll try to reword it.:)
Basically you should always keep your dog in sight and under control on access land or on lead where signs or the time of year dictates.

Like the name Gaspode - gives away what you read in your leisure time.
Bullphi, she certainly does, even to the extent of building a bigger bookshelf! :) Do you read them then? :)

Well *I* do :D :D
Yep - I got into him late in life - finally saw why my mates have been reading them for years. Now my Dad and Brother are getting into him too. Just read Men at arms and it 's still fresh in my mind -that's why I recognised the name.
Hi Bullphi and Melodysk
Well, there you go. I post on various forums and champdogs forum is the only place where my name has been 'recognised'. Must be because champdogs attracts 'quality' posters with good taste :D :D

Is this now or when the "right to roam" act comes in?

Is that if you've caused them any grief or can they ban ANY dog owner? What reasons can they do this for? Disturbance?
Helen
Hi Helen,
This is as of now. The country code has been changed to include the CROW Act 2000 and the new country code is effective from 12th July.
As for grousemoors and lambing it is a blanket ban on all dogs (under control or not) during that period of time. Presumably on the basis of disturbance, stress to ewes and the risk to young birds/lambs of being killed/eaten by the more unruly dogs out there. Lambing ban can be six weeks once a year only, but every year whilst grousemoor is a five year period whilst the shoot is set up and stocked.
