I have spoken to the vet about using Goats milk instead of Lactol but she thought it might give him the runs.  I know a lot of you use it has it happened when you have? Also is it the ordinary goats milk as purchased from Tescos?

I use a Puppy milk made from Goats Milk.  It is called Nutro-lac.  I have found it excelelnt and never makes the pups loose.  It is made by the animal health co.  www.animal-health.co.uk

I used to use fresh goats milk when my friend was a farmer but now I use Caprilac or Lamlac as Brainless says neither has given them the runnies. The other benefit is you mix as much or as little as you wish.

I use semi skimmed goats milk to start from supermarket and have never had any probs with the runs :)

This is my thinking.......

Cow's milk is made for calves (Ok I know we drink it)
Goats milk is made for kids
Bitches milk is made for puppies.

Why not try something like Welpi, Lactol or Dodson & Horrell's Starter milk which is made for the correct species?   All are in powder form so you can store it for longer periods and make up as required?

I give my puppies milk - Welpi - and they've never had the runs at all.

The reason I was thinking of going over to goats milk is in previous posts it says that there is problems with dried milk.  I thought I was using lactol but it was in fact welpi and I have been using it for over two weeks and he thriving but tiny.  I actually had another pup in a previous litter which got to this stage then died so am slightly nervous now.

Most puppy milks are adapted, but are still mostly made of Cows Milk.  The one I mentioned is a Puppy Milk, but made from Goats Milk, which is easier to digest than cows.

Hi, just to put a different slant on this, when bottle feeding I no longer use a formula, but a blend made from Carnation, egg yolk, water and a little glucose.  This has been very successful for several years now, since a friends vet told him (after doing a PM on a dead hand reared pup) that his pup, along with almost every similar puppy he had PMd, had traces of powder in the lungs, which may have been a contributory factor in losing it.   He insisted that is it virtually impossible to blend a powdered milk enough, and recomended this mixture.  Since then I have found that friends with French Bulldogs (notoriously hard to rear) use this mixture, and it is also recomended in various  of my Amrican books.

I had a friend raise a teeny English Springer puppy on this "fresh" formula and he grew up to be a very sturdy boy.  Another friend has had tremendous success with the Pedigree milk after she had to handraise a litter of Cocker pups and all survived!

Is it evaporated or condensed (sweetened) carnation you use?
- By gwen [gb] Date 24.07.04 22:46 UTC
Hi genie1, it is carnation (evaporated) not condensed, plus egg yolk only, (no white)

Thanks for all your help.  I decided to stick with the welpi whilst he was using the bottle but thank fully now he is now lapping and drinking from his mum and I have been using goats milk with no adverse effect.  He has put on 120g in one week and although still tiny seems to be totally fully of life.  If he gets the chance he will eat and drink everyone elses food not bad for a scrappy dog!!!
