do any of you use folic acid during pregnancy. if so, when do you start, how much would you give a 13 lb dog? Are there any negatives and what are the positives?

I use Folic acid with every pregnancy on my girls, I give 4 x 400ug tablets daily, it's one of those medications that you can't over dose on, anything the body doesn't need is sent back out through their wee.  I normally start a few weeks before they come in season and continue right till the end of pregnancy.  Not sure if there are any neg/pos but they've never done my girls any harm!

I start about 3 months before the season starts and then continue for 3 weeks after mating.  I understand that after the first third of pregnancy it is not necessary.

I'm confused on when to start. I've been told by a couple of people not to give it until 3 weeks into preg. but with woman you are told to take it before pregnancy. the beginning is when it is necessary as most of you are saying. ???

Starting to take it 3 weeks into pregnancy in useless.  Folic acid is needed when the foetuses are in the very early stages of development, once past that stage folic acid is totally unnecessary.  Women are told to start taking it well before they plan to become pregnant, and then to carry on with it for the first third of pregnancy.

can i know where I can get the folic acid, is it the human alrite? For a 3 kg yorkie how much I should give her?
and my girl is still no 1st season yet, she is 11 months old now, can i give her the folic acid before 1st season yet?

i use folic acid as soon as mine have been mated,i suppose people have different opinions on this but i use it then and until they have the babies,i just give one tab a day and find this works well for me.good luck,angie
