We are considering having Spice 'done',I have made enquiries with our vet over appropriate time, what is involved etc.and I am booking time off work when she has it done so I am with her throughout her 'stitches' time.Normally she is bouncing around at work with hubby three days a week so I need to have her at home to keep her a bit quieter :D
Well to cut a long query short, what I wanted to ask is do I need to inform my Insurance company prior to her having the op? Did any of you let your companies know? or if you didn't do it before the op, did you inform them about it afterwards? I don't want to get 'caught out' if anything should go wrong or if there are other things that may happen in the future that could be related to her op

as you won't be claiming on your insurance (elective neutering is not covered by insurance companies) there would be no reason to tell them?

Thanks tohme, that is what I thought, but as with all operations there is that element of risk,if something should go wrong following the op.i.e. an infection or some other unforseen circumstance, would I then be covered under the insurance for any costs that might incur?
I did realise that elective neutering is not covered and am fully prepared for any cost involved for the op. and hopefully nothing will go wrong it's just that I always look at the what if's in life :D
Thanks :)

I don't think any complications following elective surgery would be covered, because they would be 'self-inflicted' as it were.

Sorry I misunderstood!

Check your small print it will generally state it will not pay for the cost of neutering except the cost of treating any complications arising from this procedure; I have heard of some insurance companies not paying out unless you preadvise them but I think these are in the minority; certainly that has not been my experience with Petplan for example.

You could always cover yourself by a quick letter in the post........

A friend's bitch had postop complications after her spay (allergic to internal stitches) that went on for months and she was covered for all that sort of stuff. To be honest you don't need to contact them before this sort of surgery as they're not paying for for the neuter anyway
