Chester had a much better night, we tired him out with play, before we put him to bed,and I used the hot water bottle and ticking clock, he did cry for quite some time, but there were lulls, then he would start again, he eventually went off into a good sleep, waking just a few times with a little wimper, the best night so far,so I think he is getting the message! :) Now we have the toilet training to crack!

I am not blowing my own trumpet here but toilet training can be done in less that a week if you put pup outside every hour or after sleep, go out with him and talk to him ( do wee wee and good boy/girl) all the time. I used to take a cup of tea and wander round the garden for 5 mins saying these and many other daft things. I got up twice every night for two weeks to make sure thier were no accidents at night. If there was at any time an accident I cleaned it up without drawing attention to it as a pup will completely forget it ever happened if nothing is said. I find paper training is very confusing for a pup as one minute you want him to go outside and then the next on newspaper and he is never sure which it is meant to be. Never tell a pup off for an accident, one thing that is useful is to crate train a puppy because it will do its very best not to wet where it sleeps and they grow to love thier den. Sorry if this sounds bossy its not meant to its just have toilet trained two pups and a (non toilet trainable) 12 year old rescue dog in the last year and my carpets are still around to tell the tale! I can open the door and all three trail out and I say wee wee hurry up and the deed is done. I did not set out for this result but it happened in stages all on its own.

If you feel a little embarrassed saying "Wee Wee," especially in public... Try "take a break" I've used it for years with positive results :D

Same thing, less silly, especially if you happen to be a guy. It cracks me up to think of my 6'4 husband telling our dogs to "wee wee." Guess you really gotta be secure in your masculinity to say that to a dog in front of people :D :D :D :D

We used to train my parents old Cocker Spaniel with 'hurry up'. This worked fine until I had children. I was forever telling them to hurry up and it took us ages to work out why the dog kept weeing in the house :D :D The poor thing was back and forth to the vets for ages!!!!

Oh Fiona,
Roflmbo :D :D :D :D Never thought of things quite like that. Usually dogs cause neurosis in owners...how does it feel to do the opposite? :D :D :D

We use this method too -and has worked well so far, though I have to admit we had one dog who just would not train. But if you're diligent and use the 'every time its feet hit the floor dog goes out' routine it tends to get it quite quickly.

We use 'go potty'. Imagine my husband standing out front at 3am with a schizophrenic whippet cross saying 'go potty' and she is - though not the way he meant.

Congratulation Skateee, I'm so glad to hear that he's started to settle down, you can stop feeling like a meanie leaving him now!! good luck with toilet training. In regards to saying 'silly' words, I make enough of a fool of myself with the dogs anyway, so walking around saying 'go wee wees' is the least of my worries, I'm convinced that people see me coming a mile away and say 'here comes that mad dog lady again' oh well!
