Topic Dog Boards / Health / staffordshire bull terrier ears
- By WILL [gb] Date 21.07.04 08:46 UTC
Hi does anybody know how long it takes for a staffordshire bull terriers ears to settle down into the correct position.I have a six month old and when viewed her left ear seems to hang right forward without the crease in the back, but other times it seems to hang correct with a nice crease in the back.Is this natural and part of the growing up stage or has she just got a lazy ear that may need correction. If this is the case how can it be cured.Any help in this matter would be great

Hi Lel,Most of the time her ear looks like A in the picture but sometimes it looks a little like D but not quite the same.It is quite hard to explain. Is it normal for one of the ears to look a little lazy.

my bitch has got one spangled ear too, it never really recovered after she was teething.  Its quite hard to describe but looks a bit like theres an extra bit of ear at the base of one of them (too much cartilidge or something) but its not noticible all the time.  She had perfect ears until she started teething and then it went all wrong but it just adds to her character coz she's got one ear held at a jaunty angle which looks so cute.

A lot can change between 6 months and full development and pups change so much in that time.  Have her ears always been like this?

Hi Charly,
No it has not always been like this. Most of the time it is alright. The crease at the back of ear is definately there but, it just seems to go through a lazy stage every now and then.

It's her age don't worry.
If their going to go right they will, if they aren't they won't you worrying won''t make any difference.

That said I worried over Sal's ears constantly from 12 weeks to about 8 months and in the end "Thank God" they turned out fine. If her parents ears are good which her sires are (I've seen him) and her dam's are fine too 85% chance her ears will turn out good too.

Hi Karen,
Thanks for that. Her sire & dam's ears are good as, I have seen both of them. Fingers crossed they will be ok.

Then you have a better than average chance of her ears being good.

How did you get on at the potteries show, I missed MPB, I was chatting outside. You may have seen me as the show progressed :) I was sitting by the bitch ring farthest away from the stalls etc in the middle of the row almost and sitting next to an elderly lady (who happened to be a friend I hadn't seen for many years)

Hi Karen,
Didn't come anywhere but didn't expect to seeing as it was our first show. Electra did really well and handled far better than I expected. The judge did give her a second look at the end but favoured the older dog next to us when picking the final 8. It was a great experience and I am now hooked. We were at the end of the stalls by the one selling the food and drink. It has been a good week and today our affix was granted by the Kennel Club. Looking forward to the Notts & Derby Show on Saturday.

Isn't there always something to worry about when you've got a pup?  They change all the time.  I've seen pups in MP who say have flighty ears or who are long legged and they turn out fine.  Six months is like going into a teenage stage for pups and you know what thats like for us!  You sound as if you're enjoying showing her, which is what its all about.  Good luck for your next show.
