I have two westi puppies now 9 weeks old, 1 week ago Rocky caught sickness and Diahorea, didn't eat for 6 days and eventually went on a drip for 5 hours but is now slowly recovering. However his sister caught the bug 1 day after him, was only ill and didn't eat for one day and then got better. Then all of a sudden her sickness came back really severe and she passed a lot of blood and slime through her back passage. I rushed her to the vets, only for them to say well you shouldn't be breeding puppies if they are all going to get ill, there's obviously something wrong with your bitch for this to happen, ok you can go now and give us a ring at 3.30pm. I was lost for words, I wanted to tell him to stop fiddling with the computer and making stupid remarks about me when he should have been treating my puppy, but that wouldn't of helped poor holly who was in need of attention. He rang me back just after 3pm and said there was nothing he could do as he couldn't get a drip in, but he will keep her in till tomorrow after injecting some fluid in to her, but it didn't look good. My normal vet is not in till tomorrow and he is very good, he managed to put a drip into her brother who is less than half her size and the runt of the litter, should i leave my puppy at the vets with this man or bring her home where she can be loved with company if he's not going to do anything? Has anybody else had puppies with sickness and diahorea then bleeding is there some hope? as he seams to think not?

I am sorry you got such unsympathetic treatment at such an upsetting time. I am not sure what the "professional etiquette" for dealing with a vet in these circumstances is but I would be inclined to remove my puppy and go elsewhere. You are paying good money for this person's services and the least they can do is treat you in a civil fashion. Do you have another reputable vet locally ? I am sure your own vet, with whom you seem to have a good rapport will understand why you felt you had to do this.
Good luck with the little dog.

I have only been with this vet about 8 weeks, as I was recommended to them, on the whole they are v good, and v cheap less then half the cost of the last one i was with. It's just this one man, who fortunately I have only had twice, if the other one is not there!
But from 6 litters in total (3 different bitches) I have only had this problem twice with 2 pups from 2 litters. So i don't think it's mum.

I second Hugen's suggestion to go elsewhere.
Your regular vet would understand. I had a vet permanently disassociate himself from his newest partner after he heard from the aide that the partner had drawn blood from Chienne's juglar vein whilst she was sitting up & alone on the table.
The urgency regarding puppies, Diarrhea, & dehydration is much greater and immediate than older dogs. One night can make a huge difference.
good luck

I think I will complain about him first, after I have sorted my puppy out, she must come first as if he's looking after her , i don't really want to upset him . I don't want to loose my good vet either just because he has an idiot for a partner.

I have now moved on to the breeding and puppy rearing message board as i think it is more appropriate so if anybody else would like to reply, please see there.
Thankyou all
