- By Guest [gb] Date 20.07.04 03:11 UTC
i have a staffy and he is 20 months old he weighs in at 17kg and still looks like a puppy in the face. is this normal for a dog of this age and being a male dog shouldnt he be bigger in size and image either way hes my solemate and i love staffys but when i see  other staffy dogs  out walking they look bigger? if you have a staffy when did he/she look fully grown at what age.

There are a fair few Staffy people here on the forum and, hopefully, one will be along soon to give you an answer. In the meantime, you could always Register with us and then you can ask any other questions that you might have :)

17kg is at the top end of the weight range so I don't think you have anything to worry about, sounds as if you dog is just right. There are some large Staffies about and some Staffie X breeds, also males that are castrated young can grow too tall but they do not usually look well muscled. Why not join us and exchange notes with other owners.

Guest,
it depends totally on which lines your dog is from. There are the heavier bully type dogs and there are more athletic looking dogs.
Some can look quite big whilst at 6 months while there are also slow maturers that can take up to two years of age to fill out or even a little longer.
So I suppose in answer to your question -they can start to mature and fill out from 6-30 months and just depends entirely on his breeding.
Hope that helps :)

By the way the breed standard states-
Size:  Desirable height at withers 14 - 16 ins these heights being related to the weights.

Weight: dogs: 12.7 - 17 kgs (28 - 38 lbs); bitches 11- 15.4 kgs (24 - 34 lbs)

My girls are only about 13Kgs, but are the more 'terrier' types, rather than the big bully staffies that you see a lot.  If they put on much more weight than this they tend to look fat, which I hate!  :)

as most people have said that 17 kg is a good weight of the dog.is your dog the bully or terrier type?did you see the parents of the dog?i think you should be more aware that the dog is in good proportion and not too underweight or overweighjt what ever you may think is too light.dogs comes in all shapes and size even though with in the same breed remember.

hello people,
im the person who started this topic and straight away i like to say thank you for your replys. i live in england and my staffy is called tank as he is a bull-head staffy and his dad is a member of the kennel club and he looks a gem ( big in size lovely and friendly ). What i found was wierd to me was the size of tank at 20 months yet i see a reply to say his weight is what it should be. It isnt a problem to me for him being this size as my partner loves his puppy image, his look in his eyes are still as sweet as they were when he was 6 weeks old and he hasnt lost his puppy image. Dont get me wrong he has grown and hes like a bowling ball when he rests against your leg but his head seems small to other staffy dogs who are past the age of 18 months.I wasnt expected a reply when i wrote this about 3am uk time and i am grateful for your replys thank you again and i will try to get a picture on here as i am registerd now.

Hi staffy lee,
I can't comment on the size of heads but my staffy is 15 months, female and weighs 16 1/2 kilos and looks really skinny but muscular.  she is lithe but really well defined and looks totally different from all the other staffys in the area.  I used to be concerned about this until it was pointed out to me that my bitch isn't too thin its just that I have been used to seeing fat staffys as most of the ones I see are overweight and under-exercised.

Hi cheekychow,
Thanks for your comments too, its nice to know people are having the same worries ( in a nice way ) come to think of it most staffys around my area are fat but the ones that got me thinking where the ones in pictures. bull-head males looking huge in the jaw area and the skull being round like a football, im sure my little Tank will be soon become a tank if you know what i mean. thank you for replying

hi
my dog is quit large now but at 9 months old was all leg and nothing else, he did not get a chest until he was about 18 months and soon after that he head court up,  he is now 2.5 years and is the biggest stafford around here, he even makes the fat 1 look small (he's not fat as you can see his back ribs).  my dog was slow to mature (as i like them) and so might yours be,  most stafford are not fully grown until they are about 3. so you Tank has a few months yet to grow

and you cant post pic on here but you are more then welcome to send me a pic of him at

Hi staffie lover,
i have had a read of your comment and it has put a smile on my face, knowing that you have 3 staffy dogs and the thought of which i now understand is that not all dogs are fully grown at the age of 18 months. thank you for your reply and i will send you a few pictures of tank when i get home as i am at work on the reception desk using work pc,Staffy dogs are the best breed of dog there is in my eyes its a dog which can watch the telly even when corrie or eastenders are on it can sleep aslong as yourself and even trys to jump in the shower with me, i cant tell you all how much tank the staffy has changed my life, When you talk to him like a baby ( high pitched voice) he barks with happiness but and when you eat he sits on his bum like a human would with his legs streched out infront of him  looking up at me as i take every bite and his head bows down as he looks up at me he is a cutie and im sure you staffy lovers know what i mean. and theres a but coming..................ive never known a dog fart so much i guess that just comes with the package :). thank you for your replying.
