Is it normal for a dog to have white nails ?? rosie my westie has 2 on her front paws and 1 on 1  of her back feet ??  she is 8 months old.....

Weimaraners have nails to match their coats :D

Dals' nails are only coloured if there is a spot on the end of the relevant toe, so most of the nails are white. White nails are much easier to keep short, because you can see the quick!

can i ask how long should nails be ???
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 21.07.04 09:04 UTC
Once a week I clip-and-file (or dremel) away all the nail beyond the quick.

I think if you trim, file the nails regular that is the best method.

If you can see the quick then just after this. A good indication is if you look how the dog is standing if the nails are too long they make to dog appear a bit flat foot rather than up on it's toes. ( hope that make sense)

I've just looked at the Westie breed standard, and it says "underside of pads and all nails preferably black".
:)

hi jeangenie, does that mean she has a fault in her nails and she isnt perfect ...lol.....she is to me , i mean if i had got her for showing ?? which i didnt , the reason i posted was in case it was medical , so so-long as it isnt im happy
thanks

If you'd bought her for showing, then it would be a minor fault, but for a pet it doesn't matter in the slightest. I can't imagine there's anything wrong - I would only be puzzled if they were originally black and had changed. Just think of it as one of her distinguishing features, making her different from the common herd!

Jeangenie, :-)

It is desireable for them all to be black but it is very common for them not to be.

It is also quite common for the to change from black to lighter also.
